NTSB recommends ban on use of cell phones or texting while driving

Yea, you know accidents that require multiple fire trucks, ambulances, and police? Happens from time to time here in the big cities. Maybe if that person was wearing a seatbelt, they would only need 1 police officer to write up the ticket/report instead of multiple departments shutting down multiple lanes so they can scrape you off the road

They'd require those ambulances and fire trucks whether you're inside the vehicle or not.

Oh, so seat belts deter accidents that require multiple fire trucks, ambulances, and police cruisers from responding. Thanks for clearing that up and thanks for living in a "big city".

I just really think that we all know what a problem this is. And the only people who would oppose such a law are those who want to use it as a proxy for so-called government overreaching, or those that think they are so good at using their phones, and that it is the other idiots who can't manage to multitask, that don't want to give up the convenience.

Come on, be honest, its a huge problem.

Actually I allow the government to overreach more on the roads since we all own them. It's a "privilege" not a right to use them.

In all honesty, I don't believe cell phone bans will change anything. People will imagine 2 million different ways to distract themselves while driving. You can't stop it.

Agree. . . Whether it's eating, playing with the radio, reading etc, you can't underestimate people's ability to be stupid while driving.

I would rather be in 500 car accidents with a seatbelt on than 1 without

So you're saying a seatbelt makes you 500 x safer?

:lolabove: Let's definitely not put this guy in charge of anything.

If you are in the front seat, wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death by 45%. So even if you said, "I'd rather be in 2 accidents with a seatbelt on than 1 without" you'd still be overestimating their safety value.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't ban one we are confident is a huge problem.

No one is saying this will prevent all distractions or accidents. But we know it will prevent quite a few, and if it were your loved one who would have otherwise died because some numbnutz was calling ahead to pick up a pizza I think you'd be okay with it.

My pleasure

How much force do you think is exerted on an individual who is in a car crash while wearing a seat belt?

I weight 180lbs; if I were traveling in a car with a velocity of 50mph and got into an accident in which it took 3 feet to stop, 4,460 lbs of force would be exerted on my body, while wearing a seat belt. I might not die because of the seat belt, but I will require an ambulance; this will result in a traffic jam.

But we aren't confident that we can change behavior, or do it cost-effectively. It's just stupid.

My GF in college was from DC (one of the first cities to pass "hands-free" laws). When we visited, the idea was to not get caught using your phone. As you can imagine, it's a hard law to enforce. Kind of like jaywalking.
