O Line Comments

I have read several articles about Butch and the future of the program and every time they mention that we will lose our entire O-line next year. With the caliber of this line, I think the 2nd string will get plenty of reps this year to be ready for the future.

We have several guys that were studs coming out of HS that should be ready. I know it will take time for them to jell but it isn't like we will have 5 freshmen. Any thoughts?

GO VOLS!!

What does the caliber of the 1st string have to do with backups getting reps? If anything the better they are the less action they see.

at this juncture ( a lot can happen in August to impact a season) we are a 5 win team, 6 at best. A couple of injuries at a few key positions, could make it worse. Like we can't afford an injury at LB or DT and I don't think we can afford an injury to Worley. If we had some experienced WRs, maybe a freshman QB could do okay but with lack of experience at WR and a freshmen QB, not sure how bad we might look up.

I'm on 5 or 6 wins at best right now and see how healthy we are to start season..

Larry, what about Crowder to go along with Jackson and Kerby? Heard he was pushing Stone during Spring? I would think he could start now?

haven't heard that he has been pushing Stone. I keep hearing the other 2 and that the rest have long way to go to be SEC caliber. Not saying they won't get there as they continue to develop and grow, just not ready at this juncture.. I do think Crowder would be next on the list of lineman being ready if one were ranking them..

Meh. I think Stone is an NFL talent, especially considering he can play guard too. I could see Crowder possibly, possibly being as good as Stone in time. I am pulling for he and Downs though. Bout time someone from the Tri-cities shows out on the hill. I don't mean that in a bad way. Gene McEver was from Bristol Va, the man dubbed by Neyland as the best player he ever coached or seen. I hope both Crowder and Downs DO show out and go down in Tennessee history. Again, it's past time for someone from that area to shine.

Mack Crowder will. I was extremely impressed with him in the spring game. He will definitely be first one off the bench for interior this year. He earned it.

your right. even with his limited experience, he is further along than others outside of Jackson.

Honestly, for a depth guy he might not be too bad. Didn't Kiffin bring him in as a project? I was thinking he did. Either way, he's developed physically, here's to hoping its clicked mentally. Again, our line is really good. A drop off in talent from our starter to back up doesn't mean the back up sucks. I think our fans our looking to replace this current line without any fall off. We can recruit well and have plenty of depth and it still might be a while before we have a line this good, IMO.

he came in the 2010 class.. Kiffin had him committed and CDD kept him. think everyone felt he was a project, yes

Everyone has lauded our Offensive Line for their number of starts and stat's for pass protection. This season will tell the tale on whether they are capable of good run blocking...the jury is still out.......but for the Vols to have any success, the O Line must step up and prove they can indeed be a dominate force running the football. Just 30 days before fall practice, so we'll soon know what this squad is made of.
Go Vols

That's what I thought. I guess my point is that Kiffin might be a jerk wad, but dude can spot talent and recruit IMO. He's turned into a physical specimen to say the least. I'm not sure how he's developed as far as on field play. Here's to hoping he can step up and contribute if needed. I will say, you can be a pretty good player and not see much time when competing with D. Thomas, Tiny, and J. James.

It always helps to have a deep stable of OL so u can redshirt the new guys--unless they're guys like Tiny or Cosey Coleman....but those don't come around very often...

You really don't want OL or DT to be freshman or even RS freshman if you can help it....creates losing physical mismatches...:salute:

BTW, I believe we will be okay on OL for 2014....:salute:

I think we'll be alright as well. A deep stable of sophomores and juniors starting next year can't hurt.

Dumbass didn't even take any lineman two years ago.

Come on Rollin, haven't you been reading all the posts claiming Dooley rebuilt this roster something fierce and left CBJ in great shape... talent virtually insures we win a NC in the next 6 months or CBJ sucks and has to go..... Are you sure that Dools didn't sign even a single OL (or LB) a couple years ago?? Why, how could that possibly be??
