Obama candidacy stirs racist/white supremacist web sites

You're misinterpreting what "brand" means. It's not just the logo or packaging. Here's one definition: "A brand is a collection of perceptions in the mind of the consumer." Boil it down to a consistent theme:

Reagan stood for something - balls.

Obama stands for something - change.

Since you brought it up, though, here's an interesting blog interview about Obama and branding in a design sense:

Stumper : Expertinent: Why the Obama "Brand" Is Working

it's too bad that Obama's "change" isn't based on anything new. Socialism consistently fails wherever it's tried. Sweden, England, France, Germany, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and so on. Point out one successful socialist country that has low unemployment, low taxes, a high standard of living, and low inflation.

Remind me again what country is better than ours????

Oh, that is right........ never in the history of the world!

We sure need change!

Just by chance, do you think that part of what makes our country great is our ability to change?

It's getting dinged for sure. But brands have an amazing ability to come back.

This is provided they have the original core substance of the brand underneath.

As an advertiser you know that it takes more than the time Obama has been running to establish a brand. The newer it is, the more susceptible it is to failing due to not living up to brand promises.

In reference to our discussion in another thread, if he is seriously changing his stance on Iraq policy and this becomes known, his brand will be severly damaged.

This post might be overstated a bit, but I agree with your general premise.

Iraq's a dicey one now. We stuck our fists in the hornet's nest, and at least for the time being, it's plugging it up. I still admire him for seeing the fallacy of the decision to go there in the first place when most people (me included) bought into it.

What's the difference btwn "freedom" and "ability to change"?
"Freedoms just another word for nothin left to lose"

Sorry, but I thought if I posted it, it might get out of my head.

What's the difference btwn "freedom" and "ability to change"?
freedom is about the right to choose. Ability to change is simply the definition of adaptable.

They are two entirely different concepts, so the proper question would be what's the same about the two.

Having freedom allows one to use his adaptability in the manner he sees fit or to never change anything at all. Freedom gives people the right to actively or passively seek or make change.

Freedom also allows me to surf unfiltered internet, worship at the place of my choosing or not at all, go to school where I like, open a business, be a vagrant, protest the government, support the government, etc. Freedom is far broader than the ability to change and doesn't really have any relation to adapting.

Freedom = The power to determine action without restraint of the government.

Obama's Change = Confinement under the restraint of the government.

Freedom is far broader, of course. But they are linked.

My original question is if our ability to change was part of what made our country great, and I'd argue that our freedom is what has allowed us to change from the status quo for the better: to pursue technological and medical innovations, give every citizen the right to vote, end slavery, and institute the shot clock, for starters. I shudder to think what we'd be like had we never used our freedom to change.

Socialism = Status Quo

So we're probably agreeing that freedom is the stronger force behind our greatness than adaptability, no?

I would go further and say that freedom is the vehicle that drives our adaptability.
