Anyone see his speech this morning? Very powerful. This guy is a great speaker.

I think he has a potentially winning message. I disagree with some of his policy stands but think he is going to be a very formidable contender to Hillary.

He gives those on the left economically an alternative to Edwards while being a much more likable, charismatic than Hillary.

so, how quickly can one rise from running for the Chicago city council to being President??

Are we really NOT going to elect someone because of a middle name?

I hope our country has come further than that.

Even more interesting (to me at least) is how he became a senator. The front runner (Republican) was embroiled in a scandal whereby he allegedly tried to get his wife (Jerry Ryan -- 7 of 9 fame and true hottie) to attend sex clubs with him. He dropped out of the race and was replaced by that hardcore right wing African America guy who's name escapes me right now (wasn't even from Illinois!). Obama won easiy.

Had Ryan not dropped out due to this scandal, BO might not even have become a Senator - much less potential DNC presidential nominee - much less potential president.

Only in America!

it hasn't. we're poised to elect another Clinton, there's another Bush waiting in the wings, then you have Kennedy.

if people can get elected because of their last name, then why not use their middle name as a qualifier as well? Sure it's petty, but there is a large percentage of people who will vote for a name because it's a name they hear all the time.

That's true but there's a lot more to it than just their last name. The Kennedys, the Bushes, and now the Clintons are all backed by massive political machines.

I'm not sure this makes any sense to me. If Obama were related to Sadam Hussein...then it would make sense. It isn't just the name recognition with the Clinton's, Bush's, and Kennedy's ... it's the family, and the same supporters. Now...if Jamie Kennedy were elected President based on name recognition of the Kennedy name (assuming there is not relation between the famililes)...I would agree with your point.

If, on the other hand, your point is that people just vote for a Kennedy because they recognize the name and it wouldn't matter if it was the same family or not....then I would agree...the Hussein middle name might cause some people to not vote for Obama in the same way. But I think that this is a much smaller fraction of voters than the huge support bases that the other families pull out.

Does it really matter?

Once the Clinton political machine is rolling Obama will be an after thought.

i disagree, i think obama will win the nom. he needs to go ahead and start campaigning as Barack Hussein Obama though, just to try to curb the middle name crap.

you don't really think he has a chance against the Clinton machine, do you? I see him bowing out before the negative campaigning starts and getting tapped as Hillary's VP.

First post ever in this section. I met Obama, well shook hands with him, in Djibouti, Africa, last year. He was visiting CJTF-HOA (Combined joint task force-horn of africa).

I was working in the main operations compound as the radio operator when he came through.

Do you know what the capitol of Djibouti is?

He's got a tough road ahead, fighting the Clinton political machine, I don't see him making it.

my first instinct was to get pretty offended...but I decided to back off and figure out why you used that nickname.....

I guess that I should explain that...the comment could have probably been made in one of two ways:

1)to make fun of the people who think that just because his middle name is Hussein, they shouldn't vote for him

or

2)to casually refer to Obama with the name Usama (or Osama)...which is what I would have had a problem with...I think that is offensive to a lot of people

I'm not sure where you were coming from

I think that once Hillary's machine start turning out the political propaganda, there's going to alot of plays on his name.
