All this talk about people being dropped from insurance because they didn't read the fine print is ridiculous. I am completely against anykind of socialized healthcare, and I am all for personal responsibility, but making assumptions about somebody on an internet board because there is no way you can see an insurance provider doing anything unethical...or being reactionary because you are against the current healthcare bill is complete nonsense.
Truth is, people are dropped from coverage everyday. It should be when you sign a policy you should expect to be covered when it is needed. Period.
Don't you think these companies would go under if they conducted business this way? I'm not defending them, there are obvious problems but the companies denial of treatment seem to me more of a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.
It would be nice to see some real stats on the frequency of insurance abuses.
One side says it is rampant the other side says it virtually never happens.
One of the reasons more competition should have been included in HC reform. Opening state borders, etc.
I have no doubt insurance companies have no problem doing this if they are the only, or one of the limited options people have.
I'm all for free market economics, but I don't agree with the premise that business is always going to be ethical, or have benign intentions. The bottom line rules and if they can cut cost with little or no penalty, it's naive to think ethics would stop them from doing so....especially when the "blame the consumer" card can be so eaisly played.
