If the government doesn't get it in their head to start putting down the framework for high speed rail this country will drop out of the top ten.

A hike in the gas tax is the only way to cover this. It has not been adjusted since '93 I believe. I guess since the price of gas is lower than in the past it is 'safe' for them to mention this. Although I'd be reluctant if I were them to mention this before a certain event the first Tuesday in November. Plenty of time to drop the bomb on the public after that.

that will get the economy going, lets slap a 10% tax increase on gas. We are already paying 50 cents per gallon.

Also, guess who this impacts the most?

You are talking about the same government that has had I-69 in the works for over a decade and besides putting signs up the last 5 years indicating the future interstate the only progress has been the section from Memphis to Tunica that Tunica Co paid for itself.

Good lord, I don't want the Government to build it! They need to parcel the land out to private enterprise and give them tax breaks. The government can get the ball rolling by having corridors exist for companies to move in and develop.

How does that change the meaning of my earlier post at all? :)

Agree, having convenient and efficent public transit is great. One of the few things I liked about Korea was how easy it was to get anywhere in the country with minimal effort.

They still buy cars in Europe. I owned one when I was over there for emergencies. Never used it though.

Eastern Europe is a little different. Those who buy cars usually have enough saved up to go to Western Europe and buy what's called 'junk' there. Most people still just use bicycles, buses, trains, etc.

I don't ever think the US will ever give up our cars and things such as that. I doubt I ever make my 25 minute commute to work in any way other than a car.

However, why we don't build high speed monorails for commercial use and a mid-line travel in between flying and bus/taxi is beyond my comprehension.

if there was a market for either of those things, the private sector would have already done it.

If you mapped it out correctly I would bet there would be a market. The route between DC and Richmond would be a good place to start.
