In just 6 weeks in office, Trump has lost a National Security Adviser (Flynn) due to lying to his VP over contact with a Russian Ambassador (Kislyak) and has seen his Attorney General (Sessions) recuse himself from further Russian investigations due to lying under oath about his contact with the same Russian Ambassador.

Is it really 'getting nowhere'?

It's going somewhere alright. They are trying to force Sessions out because he now has the names of the people who leaked classified info to the New York Times and Washington Post. The CIA turned over their names to the DOJ. I look for some prosecutions of leakers by the Sessions DOJ in the future.

I think he has given up on ever converting anyone who voted against him to his side (if that ever even was a hope). The strategy now is simply to rally the base with these deflections. As far as that goes, the Trump base has never cared that none of his big promises of investigations and proof of wrongdoing have ever come to fruition. The Russian story will never go away but at least he has given his base a rallying cry.

I promise you that if the Republicans thought three million people voted for Democrats illegally they would investigate it to the high heavens. Controlling both houses they could easily seat a committee or counsel.

Republicans will never call for an investigation because they will look like the fools they are when nothing is found.

Right and even Trump supporters know that he is full of s***. Even while the "Lock her up!" chants were going on in full force at his rallies (and at the RNC), I really don't think that any of his voters expected that a special prosecutor would ever be assigned to investigate Hillary Clinton.
