ABC News: Obama's Pastor: damn America, U.S. to Blame for 9/11

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.
"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."
In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism.
"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.
"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation.
This will certainly get some attention. Is this the scrutiny of a Presidential candidate and/or the Clinton war machine at work?

Anybody see the clip of this guy talking about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? Hilarious.

Here's the text:

Some argue that blacks should vote for Clinton “because her husband was good to us,” he continued.

“That’s not true,” he thundered. “He did the same thing to us that he did to Monica Lewinsky.”

He added some "motions" to demonstrate while he was saying it. I never saw anything like that in my church!

I saw a film clip of this guy, he looked like a nutjob and I could see where down the road he might hurt Obama.

What I saw is what VBH just mentioned.

the fact that this wackjob is one of obama's closest advisors is truly disturbing. he also has said farakkan is a "great man." it's amazing obama is getting a pass on this. too many people afraid of looking racist i guess. if one of mccains advisors was this crazy and called david duke a "great man" there is zero question in my mind it would have been reported like crazy.

Is this any different than Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell saying similar things in regards to AIDS/ Homosexuals or Katrina/ sins of America? They were certainly scrutinized by the media outlets for those inflammatory views. This seems more of the same to me. It's just on the left side of the aisle this time.

WWIII ended when the Berlin Wall came down. WWIV is currently underway. Putin is definitely making a push to see WWV in his lifetime.

Agree for the most part.

The biggest problem this guy is facing is losing his tax exempt status for including political commentary in his sermons.

Is it just me or does anybody else believe that if the rest of America is paying income taxes that churches should too? This approach would definitely get rid of a bunch of slick "ministers" who are nothing more than parasitic con-artists out to make a buck playing on the hopes and fears of their community.

I don't see taxes stopping this.

What was said about aids and homosexuals by them?

I believe at times they've indicated that they got what they deserved.

One of them blamed 9/11 on homosexuality and other sins.

Basically the same type comments as Obama's man.

Here's some Falwell comments about 9/11 (stated on 9/13)

"I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters -- the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats -- what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact -- if, in fact -- God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.....And I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the Pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say: you helped this happen."

Some vintage Robertson...

WASHINGTON - The White House sharply criticized Christian broadcaster and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Robertson on Friday for suggesting that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s stroke was divine punishment for “dividing God’s land.”

Robertson, who has a history of controversial statements, made his comments about Israel and Sharon on his TV program, “The 700 Club.” He said, “God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible and he says ‘This is my land,’ and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, ‘No, this is mine.”’

Oh ok I don't agree with their statements either. Stupid is stupid and wrong is wrong.

I guess I could see that for large churches that may have assets like land or planes etc., but even at that if it's donated by an individual I'm just not sure. But not small ones with like 200 members or something.

What are you going to tax though? Tithe money. If that's the case could I still deduct that from my taxes?

Churches that enegage in political activity should definitely lose their tax exempt status. Taht is the law, but folks have turned a blind eye to it for quite awhile when it comes to the AA comunity. The justice department needs to be set loose on this guy.

Doubtful. I believe your donations must be made to a tax exempt (or at least IRS recognized not for profit) entity to be considered deductible. I'm not a tax expert but I believe they fall under the 501 (c)(3) category. Donations to organizations with that status are considered deductible.

I'm no expert on this stuff so I'm kinda just thinking out loud...

If in theory a church uses tithe money for the budget, to pay the pastor etc and that money isn't tax deductible anymore a lot of people will stop tithing IMO.

As it is now only something like 5-10% of members tithe anyway so that could really change the structure of churches IMO.

Churches have evolved so much with things like family life centers, Upward sports, mission trips, camps for youth and other programs that cost money.

It just seems there is a lot more to it than just making that switch.

I have no desire to ever see the government create additional tax sources.

Correct they need to spend less. If you have excess tax revenue then you save it for when you need it. That's common sense, yet every time there is a surplus of money they find something to spend it on.

Wonderful. Obama, who I don't believe for one second is a Christian at heart, but rather a muslim, sits in a church who's leader spews anti-American sermons.

Shocker.

You guys who vote for him deserve what you get.
