Obama's Speech Today

I see no way in hell any working class stiff white man or woman would vote for someone who doesn't even like white people. He even dogged his own Grandmother out in the speech. Mind you this is the same woman who raised him after his dad deserted he and his mother. He actually compared what his pastor says to what his Grandmother has said, and made it sound as if his Grandmother was worse.

Before someone jumps on my case for saying this I just want to point out that we are all Americans.. Every race has suffered injustices and racism cannot be politically corrected. As a moral society we should not tolerate racism. Remarks like BHO's pastor makes are in fact racist and polarizing.

I didn't get that feeling from his speech, including the portion about his grandmother's comments.

The playing field was more than leveled for all European peoples in America in the 1930s and 1940s with the Federal Housing Administration (coupled with soldier loans) and the suburban-ization of America. The "colored" people in this country were red-lined, could not build equity and therefore could not easily pass on wealth and net-worth to the next generation, tax bases decreased, and their communities fell into disrepair.

While I disagree with the hatred towards "white America" for this (as most Americans are wholly unaware of the causes of their inherited standing in life), I would walk with caution on playing the "every race has suffered equally" card.

A few points: first you can see why people are drawn to him(all races and genders included), he is a wonderful speaker. Very powerful, fluid, engaging:
but after that, what did he say, it rang a bit hollow to me becuase of this, BHO's montra, calling card as it were, is Change, the anit-Washington, so why after 20 years say some of Rev. Wrights views are racist, and intolerant, they are factually wrong. In 20 years BHO didn't sit him down and tell him Reverend your just wrong and here's why. Which begs the question, his judgement, his beliefs, or his stregnth. Was he not strong enough to dress him down, worse case scenerio that he believes alot of this to be true.
At the end of the day, he did what any politician would do, cut bait for political success, as most in Washington would, making him the same as most politicians, not the trail blazer his surrogates would have you believe.
I believe him to be hypocritical as well, he did defend the Rev. Wright, by telling everyone to look at the whole man, he has done good, but when he spoke out against Imus, Imus was not given the same latitude. Imus is a salty old bastard on his best days, but he also sponsors many charities, and runs a childrens horse ranch.
While I know he's hoping this is behind him, I honestly think he has a lot more to answer too.

Any man who throws his own grandmother under the bus has the makings to be a fine President! On the other hand I hear the Duke camp is trying to get her on their ticket!

I think he was talking about human history. Not just American History. I understand your point but not every white person here in America inherited social standing in this country. What I don't understand is hatred is directed at white Americans exclusively when most Africans were captured and forced into slavery by their African brethren, then sold to Europeans.

the difference: the things his pastor complained about were delusional wackjob issues. . . the things he says white people complain about are actual issues. I found the whole thing rather insulting. He is essentially saying "white people are wackjobs too."

Anyone see it?

I thought it was a very effective speech. He's certainly very skilled at public speaking. This will likely be sufficient to stop the negative effects of the pastor's comments and Obama's link to the pastor...

I was most surprised by the BBC's take. They called it 'perhaps the most important speech in modern American politics'... A stunning appraisal.

Back to my original post on the speech - he's only saying SOME white people are wackjobs (poor and middle class).

Upper middle to upper class white people aren't wackjobs - they are the problem (e.g. corporations)

Two ways to judge the speech:

1. Did it help Obama with those likely to vote democrat? Probably so.

2. Did it represent an comprehensive view of race relations? No way. He attempted to show he understands the anger of both sides. He understands the black side much better than the white side.

NPR had people practically tripping all over each other this morning to proclaim the greatness of this speech and defend Wright.

Bottom line is that those who were blindly following BHO they will continue to do so. Facts don't matter to those.

BTW has anyone heard Emain's views on this issue?
