OC Search - Kendall Briles (merged)

Originally I wanted Briles, but the more research I do & the more I dwell on it the more I worry he wouldn't stay put.

Since Baylor he's been a one & done every stop.

FAU 1 year then goes to Houston
Houston signs an extension and now appears to be leaving for FSU

Really feel like Pruitt is trying to find a 2+ year guy, someone who will come in and fit in with the staff and area and stay awhile.
And?
Saban was pretty much one and done until he became head coach at his first stop
My coaches do the same thing
Build resume
Learn different schemes and leadership skills
Make connections
Then become head coach before start building a name for themselves

Meanwhile, as of 1:25 Eastern, no presser is scheduled per the FSU athletic dept site, and Briles hasn't been announced.

Let me start by simply saying in his entire career, from 1973 until now Nick Saban has only spent 1 season at 3 places.

Syracuse OLB Coach for 1977 left for WVU DB Coach
Navy DB Coach for 1982 left for MSU DC
Toledo HC for 1990 left for the NFL

Meanwhile:

As of 12/17 @ 6:20 Eastern, Kendal Briles has NOT been hired by FSU or anyone else. He's still puttering along at Houston.

His team is playing Army in the Armed Forces Bowl on 12/22, this coming Saturday.

We've interviewed his brother-in-law Jeff Lebby, formerly at Baylor with Briles, now (and still) QB coach at UCH. Thought there were a couple of random old roommates being discussed as well, but I've lost track of those.

I find the complete disappearance of Kendal Briles from the NCAA gossip mill fascinating.

You do realize that was just speculation from a writer and didnt actually happen?
Imagine this: you are interviewing with Nick Saban for the OC position and you tell him you will take the job conditionally. The condition is that he will reorganize his staff in order for the OL coach you prefer to be brought in. Any guess as to how long it would take him to say GTF out of my office?

I say that Kendall Briles would be a good hire, as would others with proven resumes at lesser programs. I think that we need a proven commodity at OC to offset the inexperience of CJP as a Head Coach. If he has a legitimate OC that can call a game and handle to offense without much assistance it allows CJP to focus on being a HC. The OC doesn’t have to be a homer in per say, but he should be a proven coach that can develope talent and has an aggressive mindset toward play calling. We cant win with a coach that is happy with a 7-14 point lead and then calls conservative plays to “safely” maintain a lead.

Jumping from FAU to Houston and then potentially FSU or UT should cause no reason for concern.... Hell, I would be more concerned with a Matt Canada guy (I would take him in a heartbeat) because look at his stops as OC:

Indiana 2007-2010
NIU 2011
Wisconsin 2012
NC State 2013-2015
Pitt 2016
LSU 2017
Maryland 2018
NEW P5 JOB - 2019

I have a bigger concern with someone who hops around P5 schools every year as opposed to Briles who is working his way up the ranks... Briles doesn't strike me as the type to want a Head Coaching gig in a G5 program.... Jumping from G5 OC gigs quickly is very different from getting hired as OC at a SEC school or P5 program.... There's incentive for him to stick around for a few years at a big school. That's not the case at the FAU's and Houston's of the world.

Fair point, Houston plays Saturday I still expect Briles leaves after that game...where he goes is the question.

I think he only leaves for a P5 OC job though, cause with his resume there is a good chance a few years in P5 calling plays lands him a P5 HC gig sooner than taking a G5 HC gig now.

Houston is without great qb King. Starting a freshman with 45%...sure doesn't help.

But Briles is an absolute hoss. Far and away #1 oc out there. Too bad he and JP apparently didn't "mesh".

The real heat is on Applewhite. Their AD came out and PUBLICLY stated anything less than a 10 win season was "completely unacceptable"! Talk about high standards lmao. If he loses Briles, dude's time there is limited.

This one bowl game is all we need to conclude that briles sucks.

lol yup

Overall data shows 31 points is the LEAST they've scored all year. 46 motherf*$*#* points a game. God dang!

With a crappy freshman qb they have no RPOs and cant run like d'eriq.

Excellent post. Canada is a job hopper, mental whack job, and a mediocre oc. Don't see why anybody wants that gimmicky goon.
