Offensive Line...Over rated

I think it was A. Davis (former vol lineman) that said thad they were very good but they were not will imposers. I miss the days when we fired off the ball and had Lewis or Henry types hitting the hole. Better days are coming with better players. Hopefully we get some linemen with a nasty streak.

Our O line just needs to play mad and aggressive. They're not overrated, just not playing pissed off......yet.

this group has never been as good at run blocking as they have at pass protection - now you are seeing defenses that have no fear of our receivers/QB play and so they are getting much more pressure

that being said i agree that to date they have underperformed I think every reasonable fans expectations

My thoughts exactly.

I don't think k the offensive line is bad at all. Listen Jones says his system is infallible. There is a reason he went 4-8 his first year at Cinci when they were coming off an undefeated regular season. Listen again. 12-1 with only loss to an urban Meyer Florida team, to a 4-8 record.

Surprised that no one else has mentioned this.

This line is talented. Period. Do you know what 4+3+3 equals? It equals a freakin 1st down. The system may be infallible but it freaking sucks on year one.

IIRC that is exactly what the coaching staff have said about Weisman. He plays with a mean streak.

Antone Davis and Eric Still had nasty streaks.

Zach Fulton, by the way, may also and is consistently the most underrated player on the whole team.

I know this is asking a lot, but you might want to look in on the mitigating circumstances of the Cinci team from 2009 to 2010.

comes back to QB play ..we dont have a QB that can execute basic passes
-
to keep OP from having to laugh..a defense does not have to put 8 men in the box to key the run . Especially fast defenses like UF and the Ducks . What matter is that they make the run the 1st key. If a safety runs a 4.6 40 ...it does not take him long to move 8 yards from the high position to the run gap. The safeties are cheating up , the corners are staring into the backfield. Linebackers are freezing over their gaps and even waiting off the delays ..before either dropping into zone or bringing pressure.

This is the result of 0 respect for the passing game . 5 offensive linemen , regardless of how good they are , are going to have a tough time maintaining gap integrity against 7-9 defenders.

The passing game develops ? The offensive line and rbs will look awesome because d's will have to pay equal respect to the passing game and will be 2 steps back on their run keys.

Have any of you ever wondered why coaches or virtually every offensive style , be it CFB or the NFL , talk about offensive balance ? 50 run 50 pass with equal success between the two ? now you know . Pass affects run ..run affects pass. If teams could JUST line up and 'run it' ...well no one would every throw a forward pass.

ok best oline in the country...no......but worst....no....

they did awful at florida. but then again... that florida dline is so fun to watch. GAH I HATE SAYING THAT.

but they stepped it up second half. or floridas d got tired or were convicted of murder a few times during halftime and couldn't make it for the second half. whatever.

that being said our OLine handles guys like clowney fairly well. i just think maybe they came out of the gate a little slow on saturday.

All of which has been our problem...

Last year had the most prolific offense in Vols football history how was that the problem? The defense was the problem last year.

Florida lines up in the I formation and runs power football but they did not dominate us running between the tackles because they do not have an elite running back. They beat us with speed on the corners.

LSU lines up and runs power football and are very successful, do you know why? because they have an elite fullback and running back.

Looking at the top 10 rushing teams in the NCAA 5 run a spread option, 3 run a triple option type offense and 2 you could classify as I formation power football.

I don't think we have the personal to run an I formation
power set and right now we do not have the personal to run the spread option so we are kinds in no mans land with our talent and experience.

I think we have good receivers that have talent but no
experience, our OLINE has some talent and experience,
our running backs are average at best and we do not have the QB play right now to be successful with any type of offense.

Prolific against whom? Akron?

No threat of a passing game makes having a good rushing game difficult to impossible. Add to that our backs are not on the level that they need to be to succeed in the SEC. Also, yes, I feel that the OLine is somewhat overrated. I think everyone thought that being upperclassmen automatically equaled being great.

We have an I-formation offensive line. And a good one.

The scheme minimizes their talent. They are not firing off the ball because that is not our system. Bajakian to blame.

So what does the scheme do to prevent them from firing off? Our base scheme is a zone blocking scheme. We've run the same blocking scheme since 2009. The problem is, these guys never developed a mean streak or a chip on their shoulder. They got all the praise and now that it's time for them to carry the offense along while they have growing pains, they have come up exceedingly short. Not even against big fronts, either. Both Oregon and Florida had six men fronts regularly and we were not able to dominate Oregon on the ground and Florida absolutely obliterated our line.

I have never once seen this line take over a game against FBS talent
