Official 2012 DNC thread

The problem is there are a tremendous amount of southern voters that vote republican strictly because of their social stances.

hold up. Surely you aren't limiting the social idiocy voting pattern to southern conservatives? The hard left crowd votes more social looniness than any conservative ever considered.

No not at all
I am saying in the south a large part of the republican base is social conservatives.
They vote the GOP ticket strictly because of the social issues you mentioned earlier.
Social Conservatives give the GOP the stronghold they have in the south.

because voting to prevent gay marriage while this country falls apart economically is useless

While I agree, to some people, social issues are a bigger issue than our economy. They might think voting about money is useless when it compromises their values.

if he'd throw out the idiotic social side of his candidacy, he'd have a chance, but he can even get me to like him with all of that silliness. I freaking hate both sides of the feverish debaters in those fights. Letting our political future be hijacked by idiots debating abortion, gay marriage and weed is pathetic.

Agreed on all counts

The thing is - Huckabee is only super conservative socially (which I know would turn of independents). He's not a hardcore fiscal conservative by any means - pretty moderate actually.

Also agreed, and it is why I am in BPVs camp on this one. I would be all for the guy if he would drop the social silliness.

That's because the vast majority of the voting public is entirely too lazy to vote using anything but emotion to guide them.

I also don't think that voting for a guy who is pro-choice and pro-gay marriage, or whatever, necessarily compromises one's values. That said, it's hard for me to get behind someone who goes out of his way to oppose things like that, but its because I think those that do are either stupid or wasting our time by pushing that agenda. And yes, that goes both ways.

Yep. It's shocking how many people don't know anything about the candidates, what they stand for, or their policies.. yet tell me who I should vote for because a friend of their aunt told them to vote for Obama/Romney

If I understand the Bible, God gives us free will. we are to love our neighbours. We shall forgive others as God has forgiven us. We shall pray for them that precescute us.

I believe it is a sin to have an abortion or have homosexual relations. I do not think it is any more of a sin than any other sin.

If God gives us free will. As Christians we should give others free will. I have heard preachers preach against abortions and homosexuals like that is the worse thing anyone could ever do and these people are hell bound. The same preacher will then preach that its ok to use a belt or switch to correct children. Think about that..... it is okay to beat your kids but god forbid if a same sex couple hooksup.

as Christians
we can vote against same sex marriage but we cannot stop 2 men from living together.

we can vote against allowing alcoholic beverages from being sold in our county but we can't stop someone from going to the next county and purchasing it .

We can vote for candidates that are opposed to abortions but we can't stop a woman from getting an abortion, legal or not.

We can vote to not legalize marijuana but we can't stop someone from smoking it.

I know several people that will never vote for a dem because same sex marriage is in their platform or because they support choice concerning abortion rights.

We would be better Christians if we would stop trying to force our beliefs on others.
We should pray for all sinners and try to live our lives in a way that people can see how Christ can change people through the lives we live.

No one likes to be told what to do or that they have to do something.

We can vote for social issues and make things illegal to do but we will never be able to force our beliefs on others.

Let others live their lives the way they choose.
Live your life the way you choose.

That is the free will God granted us all.

Are you backing Obama for President? If so, you should realize that these types of social issues are the only shot that he has. Were the entire U.S. population to only vote according to the state of the economy, then Obama would have no chance whatsoever.

You agree with the GOP for ignoring her ?

Come on GA....

Sarah sticks her foot in her mouth on a regular basis, that is a given.

She is also the one person in the GOP that can fire the base up.

TP's and social conservatives are going to have to turn out in big numbers for Romney to win. She can ignite that base..

I think the GOP made a mistake in not giving her a speaking roll at their convention.

Name someone else who can fire the base up and get them excited like Sarah can?

I'll take a stab at this. NOBODY can fire up the GOP base as well as Barack Obama.

No sir. I am not backing Obama or Romney.

Are you kidding me? Get out of TN much? Been to AL lately? Been to GA lately??

Were you not suggesting that we do away with the popular vote for POTUS?

if so would congress not elect/appoint the president?

no, the electoral college would determine potus. Congress has nothing to do with the process as the electors are chosen by the individual states

R.E.M. Asked Fox News to Stop Playing 'Losing My Religion' During Dem. Convention | The Weekly Standard

and here is FNC's response:

A Fox News spokesman responds: “FOX News Channel’s use of an R.E.M. song during Thursday’s edition of Fox & Friends was in full accordance with its license agreements with all appropriate parties. Nevertheless, we’re always flattered to have this much attention for a song selection and we hope R.E.M. was able to satisfy their publicity fix.”
