Official Brexit Referendum Discussion

They will eventually. Currently, it’s more a political tool than anything. I actually think a referendum would fail, so Sturgeon should use the opportunity to drum up support. That being said, if they really want to leave, they will eventually be given the chance.

You may be right. Again, with consent or without, I don't think Spain and Belgium want the precedent that would come along with welcoming a newly independent region. Spain especially. The Catalans will go nuts if Scotland breaks from the UK and is welcomed by Brussels. The pro-independence polling in Catalonia dwarfs that of Scotland.

So one individuals opinion negates hog’s statement on other sovereign countries likelihood to vote in favor. And even in that opinion he points to the large hurdles to overcome. Ok...
Yes, I’ll take the opinion of the former EU council president who actually frequently speaks with the leaders of these other countries over someone who actually thinks the EU only considers net money coming in/out when considering adding new members.

Are you sure about this? The numbers I’ve seen are lower (though when I was last in Barcelona, there were a LOT of Catalan separatist flags flying).

And Spain has made it clear that they will not veto Scotland’s membership as long as it’s done legally. I actually haven’t seen anything regarding Belgium’s point of view. Certainly nothing from the Belgian government.

Recent polling has swung against complete independence and has declined from it's high point right before the Spanish police started cracking down on the referendum and jailing pro-independence politicians. That said, the general election in November saw pro-referendum parties pick up almost 60% of the votes.

Feel free to! And then I guess you’ll also have to take all of the uphill arguments in front of it he offered up too. Here I’ll summarize the article for you since it isn’t clear you read it. “Yes the EU would love to have Scotland... BUT...”

If what you said was the link pointed to an EU schill parroting the EU party line out of one corner of his mouth while at the sane time saying never gonna happen out of the other corner of his mouth yeah it’s exactly what you said.

If you had any idea who Donald Tusk is, you would know your statement is silly.

I was listening in and looked this up. Not totally revenant, but shocked to see France has 140K staff for one department. Unreal. By comparison the French Army has 117K personnel.

Fact check on the EU budget

* there are around 60,000 EU civil servants and other staff, who serve some 500 million Europeans (and countless others around the world).
* by comparison, the French Finance Ministry has around 140,000 staff.

They want a socialist society and a unitary government. And your example shows that’s exactly what they have. Now they just have to be able to afford it. 🤷‍♂️

EU on the brink: Boris told to quit Brexit transition to protect UK from economic fall out

BORIS JOHNSON has been warned not to delay the end of the transition period and distance the country from the eurozone to avoid being caught up by an economic fall out triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

A pro-Brexit lobby group warned of the repercussions to Britain of any major shock to the European Union’s ailing economy in the coming months. Brexit Watch said the mountainous piles of toxic debts built up by the bloc’s government could easily spill over into the British economy as a result of a new financial crash. Former Brexit Party MEPs Ben Habib and Brian Monteith established the pressure group to hold Mr Johnson to account while he negotiates the UK’s future relationship with Brussels.

They believe the fragile eurozone could be on the brink of a major implosion triggered by the global economic and political fallout of coronavirus.

The Prime Minister was urged to leave the EU’s single market and customs union at the end of the year to limit the UK’s exposure to the impending crisis – which is expected to hit the bloc much harder than the 2008 financial collapse.

“As the Spanish have rightfully identified, the European Union, or parts of it, are going to be hit much harder than other parts of the world because they go into it with very high unemployment and very high national debt levels – particularly in Italy, Greece, France and Spain.”

But the UK must continue to distance itself from the EU to avoid being dragged into the looming Eurozone financial crunch via liabilities of around £439 billion to the European Investment Bank and other agreements with Brussels.

Boris blocked from claiming EU unemployment rescue cash despite UK's budget contributions

BORIS JOHNSON will be blocked from using Brussels' cash to fund the UK's rescue package for workers impacted by the coronavirus crisis.

The Prime Minister has sanctioned an unprecedented scheme to protect millions of pay as you earn and self-employed workers worth tens of billions of pounds. And with the European Commission also preparing for a huge surge in unemployment, Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled her own rescue package. The bloc’s most senior official is hoping to borrow £88.5billion to help cover lost earnings to allow companies who have lost business because of the global pandemic to drastically reduce their workers’ hours.

In a daily social media address, the European Commission president said the continent was suffering from the “greatest human tdradigies since the wars” in a vow to help people get back on their feet.

She added: “Millions of people cannot go to work but they still have to buy groceries and pay the bill. Companies are paying salaries to their employments even if right now they are not making money.

“Europe is now coming to their support with a new initiative, it is called SURE.”

Brussels is hoping to keep “millions of people in their jobs” by by covering their lost earnings and also teaching them new skills in the coming months.

But it has emerged Britain will not be able to cash in on the proposal despite still paying into the EU budget as part of the post-Brexit transition scheme.

Conor McGregor: ‘It Is Time to Talk Ireland Leaving the European Union’

Former two-weight mixed martial arts world champion and all-around sporting superstar Conor McGregor may have just become Ireland’s biggest advocate for ‘Irexit’ — an Irish exit from the European Union.

McGregor, who has conquered top-tier opponents at featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight in the Dana White-led Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and became the first fighter in promotional history to claim two belts simultaneously in 2016, declared that it was “time to talk about Ireland leaving the European Union” in a social media post on Friday.

Whether or not he would come down in favour of an Irish exit after having that discussion was left an open question, although he strongly indicated that he would likely be in favour of leaving in a follow-up post lamenting the fact that “We do not have leaders in Ireland, we have messengers. Subordinates.”

Can we send this to the "Professional Sports Are You With It?" thread? Or maybe Franklin won't get paid as much by the Daily Mail and Breitbart if we move it.

Is this where trade imbalances are important in GB, but American trade imbalance of $1T is not an issue?
