Official Game Thread: #9 Tennessee at #4 Michigan State (3:30 BTN)

Kind of funny reading MSU's board and seeing all the mental gymnastics they are doing to give then a pretend moral victory.

- We were on the road against a top 5 team in a full stadium.
- We were missing 2 key key contributors/starters
- The first 5 minutes still count and shouldn't be overlooked considering we entered your house and punked you at the start
- Most of the game we had a free throw and foul disadvantage.
- The refs knocked off a Mashack layup for a charge call that should have been an obvious blocking call.
- The foul rules were known at the start of the match. They had a guy with 7 fouls just like Mashack.

I’m having a really hard time keeping my excitement at a reasonable level after Knecht’s performance. If we saw the real player he is today, he will could be the best that’s come through here in a while! Or, we may have seen a flash in the pan. But putting up that performance against an Izzo team, even in exhibition, was inspiring.

He looks really good. But Tyreke Key also lit up Gonzaga last year in an exhibition so I'm trying to temper my expectations haha

There's a huge difference between Knecht's overall skill level and Key's. Knecht has a wonderful handle and loads of offensive skills. His ability to drive to the basket is levels above Key. Key shot the ball well against Gonzaga. He didn't take it to the basket like Knecht.

One thing I really enjoyed today (aside from our overall play) was the in-game moments with Izzo and Barnes. I know that’s not possible or maybe even desired in a regular season setting, but that was a lot of fun and showed a lot of what these guys are thinking during live action. Yeah, some of it was slapstick, but it was cool to see a lighter side to Izzo.

We’re gonna be a problem this year. That was a great precursor environment for when we travel to Rupp, Bud Walton, etc. I think Awaka may average a double-double this year.
Double double is probably a stretch but if he can give us something like 8 and 6 a game that should be good enough.

This. While I understand the hesitation based on previous transfers and Key's drop-off post-Gonzaga, Knecht can affect a game in so many more ways than Key could. Key was a shooter and not much else. Knecht can shoot, drive in traffic, and handle the ball in the open court while pushing tempo. We may have seen his best effort today like we did from Key vs Gonzaga, but I doubt if we will see Knecht just disappear like Key did. He's infinitely more skilled.
