Official Game Thread: #9 Tennessee vs. Lenior-Rhyne (6:30pm SEC Network+)

Bob and Bert just interviewed Cameron Carr and he was a great interview. Obviously, a really smart kid and just listening to him, you can tell he had a smile on his face. I forgot his Dad was former NBA player, Chris Carr. He said he doesn't watch as much of his Dad's highlights as he should, but loves to give him a hard time about losing the dunk contest to Kobe.

DJ can play, like Mookie said, I hope he sticks around. Cade reminds me of Fulk, a little. JP is going to be good and productive in a couple of years. Dilione is not having the greatest game, but all the freshmen and redshirts look pretty damn good. I know it's Lenoir-Rhyne, but this class is loaded, imo.

Edit: my bad, forgot about Carr, who may be having the best game of all the freshmen
I'm impressed with all the new guys as well. Even Jefferson looked good on that one drive.

The improvement by Mashack on his offense since last February when he had to take over and be “the guy” is impressive. He used to be a liability. Now he’s a pretty nice asset.
Yes, his on-ball reps and passing decisions weren't the best, but his shooting is a lot better. Still great defensively as well.

Gainey looks like he belongs.
Knecht will be a factor.
Awaka can board.
I thought Phillips and Estrella both showed great potential and feel for the game.
Carr has a smooth offensive game.

Dillone didn't look that great. We'll definitely need ZZ to run the show.

Barnes obviously gets great basketball players, but he also requires them to be high quality individuals. What a coup it was to get him 8 years ago.

Is Ziggy a "great" player? Love the guy, but I wouldn't go that far. I say that mostly because his lack of size can be a problem for him, and us,
when we play stout, physical opponents--teams that have guards with size inside and out. His drives to the basket become more problematic because he can't get his shot off. And as good as he can be on defense, he can be out-muscled.

For this reason I'm excited about Mashack and the development of his offensive game. The better and more dependable he gets on the offensive end, the more valuable he becomes because he's a very athletic, tough-minded guard with size. Size, combined with athleticism, becomes more important the higher up the team-talent ladder you go--more important the farther you go in the NCAA. That's not to say that smaller guards can't be very effective--we just saw one with Michigan State--but I also saw Baylor win the national title a couple of years ago with some big guards who can take a defender off the dribble and score. I, for one, will be interested to see our guard rotation and how it evolves of the course of the season.

huh? Zakai is a great basketball player. He is a top 5 perimeter defender in the sport, can handle, shoot, and works his ass off on both sides of the ball. Does he have some physical limitations? Sure, but he makes up for it then some with everything he does. We all saw how sorely he was missed when he went down last year.

You make a good point. Based on what I saw last night, you don't want Mashack running point though. Not knocking him, but it's not something he has a good feel for. ZZ is our best option.

Not sure what qualifies as "great", but he is Pre-Season All SEC, and two time Defensive team All SEC.

Well Vescovi is a 2 time all SEC player along with preseason all American and there’s posters on here that still think he sucks and one of the freshmen should move him to the bench? There’s no IQ test required to post here!

My favorite part of last night's game: pace. Even after a make or when LR was back on defense, they pushed the pace. It wasn't just for fast breaks. It was to get into the offense faster, something we absolutely should be doing with our roster. I know Barnes has talked about pace before, but this is the first time I've seen the whole team actually do it.

He is a great player. Per usual, almost everything is matchup dependent. We saw how small guards can run circles around larger guys last year against FAU
