I think it is a little of an inferiority complex. Everybody else is for example: The University of Tennessee, The University of Michigan, The University of Notre Dame, etc. so I think Ohio State felt a little inferior just being called Ohio State.

You would too if you had to live in Ohio

Rodgers, Young, and possibly Favre and Brady (will have to check the last two; I definitely know Rodgers did) needed time to develop.

(At the very least, the years Favre and Brady didn't start were their rookie years...which isn't abnormal for professional QBs.)

Tebow also provided more of a power running option/ability out of the spread that Meyer wanted for his offense.
