It won't work, unless they were to start playing the playoffs before New Years (...which would cause people to care even less about the remaining bowl games, since the playoff round would have begun). Mainly because the FBS is already trying to work around/not run into the NFL postseason as is.

They don't want to try to compete with the anything like the Super Bowl - let alone the NFL playoffs - because, well, it's likely a battle they'll lose (even in the long run)...and a lot of the schools, powers that be at the conferences/schools, and the NCAA know that.

The playoff got more right then wrong and in my opinion prevented Saban from another championship which I am always for.
