Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

The game thread in the FF scrolls so fast you cant keep up anyway and still watch the game. Too many posters in there especially now that we are good again under CJH.

I am watching Bama, scouting for next week lol. That 2nd half vs UGA and Vandy game werent flukes...the Bama defense is not nearly as good as under Saban. Seem to be solid against the run...but their secondary is not very good. A far cry from Saban era good. Saban was a former DB coach just like Smart though. It was his area of expertise, so naturally they were gonna have good fundamentals etc. Maybe Washington getting 60+ hung on them in the National Chip game wasnt just athletes being inferior...their defense isnt working at Bama either. Bama has way more talent than we do in the secondary...and they still look bad. We are capable of beating them if we can shore up the Oline in my opinion.

A lot of Bama's real strength has been in the name and ability to attract quality backup players. They and some others have always been able to grab the cream for starters, but the bench is important and Saban could hang on to those guys. With the prospect of more NIL money going to the starters, it's hard to see high quality Bama bench riders willing to stay around. That may mean a lot of top teams are in store for Vandy type ambushes until the top teams figure out how to stop the defections.

The real fault in this whole mess is that the NFL has been using college football as its minor league. Take out the NFL prep, and we could get back to students having fun as amateurs. However the NFL owners know they don't have a chance at making farm teams as attractive and lucrative as college football, so they aren't about to spend money trying, and the NCAA never had the balls to fix the mess. One spin off that nobody has addressed yet has to do with the thing about the AC court ruling that the NCAA was basically making slaves of college athletes. Now consider that decision with respect to licensing boards for professionals and even unions. Courts have a bad habit of taking an extremely narrow view and turning out rulings that come back to bite when somebody broadens the interpretation.

Another thing about Bama under Saban was the thing about "rehabilitating" coaches. What it really meant was that Saban had a closet full of backup coaches (coached up Saban style) that he could pull out when the starter got poached. Never could figure out why he took in Butch Jones though. Don't bet that the "assistants/analysts" weren't actually coaching, and they were certainly being used as support staff for the guys labeled "coach". Another Saban end run on the NCAA and rules on the number of coaches..

Bama was an inch away from getting beat 2 weeks in a row by unranked teams they were favored by 24 and 21 points over respectively. Oof.

Oklahoma just dacked ewers, stuffed a run, and picked him off on 3rd down vs Texas!!! Hahaha

Go SOONERS

I don't belive the SEC is very strong this year. A couple of very good teams, and a whole lot of good to average. Not a weak league, just not elite.

However, not sure I've seen much in terms of elite elsewhere. Maybe the Buckeyes?

Absolutely hate the spin that goes into "news" "headlines". According to ESPN, Missouri had a "bounce-back win" over Massachusetts (1-6). No team winning a game against a bottom of the barrel opponent deserves terms like "blowout" (Clemson v WF) or "bounce-back" - and that includes our first games this year, too.

I'm thinking the SEC is certainly on par with the big 10, and heads and shoulders across the board with the other conferences (like the ACC). The SEC while still very lopsided in strength has more parity across the board than other conferences. Even Vandy can bite on any given weekend, but it's unlikely that most top teams in other conferences have much to worry about against their weakest teams.

Agree. I think it's definitely the strongest conference, collectively. I just don't see a monster team. This may be a year where the playoff teams and championship will be pandemonium.

The big 10 is glorified HS ball.
