Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Growing up in that era with friends who had GTOs and similar was risky business. Never did get to drive a GTO, but I did drive a friend's '66 390 Fairlane GT. The clutch was like a beartrap. I distinctly remember having to sit through a couple of lights coming up 17th to turn onto Cumberland. Left leg was getting a bad case of the shakes by the time I finally got through the light. Had to look good for the passengers, though, so it was grin and bear it situation. My first time with 4 on the floor, too; all the previous experience was three on the column.

Oh Lordy ... the change from 3 on the tree to 4 on the floor was a doozy. Damn good memories!

I've been in the market for a mid 2000's Cayenne to turn it into an offroad junker.
I get an email from Bring A Trailer every time a Cayman comes up for auction and I still love the 911 best, but a Cayenne probably fits my old-man and business needs the best.

Hey McDad...

Very similar to the Porsche...lightweight, rear wheel drive, 400hp turbo 6cyl (,V6 not flat6) manual trans and exceeds 1.oGs laterally with grip to spare in corners. I think the Lotus is actually prettier especially from the rear 3/4 view and from the back. The twin turbo V6 in the Lotus is a Toyota but probably still not as reliable as the Porsche honestly. This article has the rear view etc and stats. Never seen 1 in person. Only ever seen 2 Lotus on person period.

^^^ thats the last gas powered Lotus sadly. I always say sadly and I drive a manual simply because its fun...but the truth in the matter is electrics will blow the doors off anything less than a $1,000,000+ hypercar. Shoot, Kiddiedocs bone stock tesla will leave town on a 911, ferraris etc. The brand new Vettes are as fast as any Tesla except the plaid model and close to it. My boss has a 75th anniversary edition that is Car/driver tested 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Its an automatic with launch control too...so grandma can launch at 2.8secs if she wants to. Push a button, then stand on the gas. That simple. Crazy.

Jabari Davis interview ^^^^

Lotta people sleep on this guy when we have the talks about great VOLS RBs of the past. Sure, Webb had amazing raw talent, Garner amazing speed,Henry and Stephens were Thunder and Lightning... AK amazing quickness and catching, etc etc. Davis was an absolute beast himself though...he flat ran over people, sought contact when he didnt have to. Great goalline leaper too on the HB Dive plays. He was an amazing athlete for his size...Nick Chubb is closest to him in size and speed. Like Stephens, Davis was a gatorkiller too. Love that dude. Glad to hear how involved he still is with the team, camps, everything. Hes a great VFL.

A Lotus without a Cosworth engine seems like a crime against humanity. I can't imagine what Colin Chapman would be thinking about it. I used to love F1 racing when Lotus was king, and before drivers just point cars and push buttons.

Those 70s, 80s, and 90s American "sports"cars were absolute crap. Partly because of the EPA/lefties and partly because the big3 automakers just suck. Being that I turned 16 in 1993, the government and Detroit conspired to make sure the weakest, slowest cars were made and on the road in my youth. Bastards.

That picture shows a 5.7L (350cid) V8 engine that only managed 200hp. While that is absolutely preposterous all by itself and should piss everyone off, the figure was also crankshaft HP...in a rear wheel drive American car...so on a Dyno it likely put about 170HP down to the actual wheels. 15% loss due to friction,/physics. So 170HP in a 3000+lb car. Slow as crap. In 1993 when I turned 16, a Mustang 5.0 was sadly the standard by which cars were measured. If it was faster than a 5.0, it was "fast" to us...if not, it was slow. A 1993 Mustang GT 5.0 (302cid) V8 made 235hp. Crankshaft. So maybe 200HP at the wheel in another 3000+lb sled. Slow as crap. Thats 47HP per litre by the way. Crankshaft. Forty seven HP per litre of displacement. In 1993. Thats embarrassing. A Honda Prelude from the same year made 190HP from just a 2.2L 4cyl engine that was also naturally aspirated. The 4cyl Prelude was actually faster...0 to 60 in 6.3seconds. No turbo. Just engineers that gave a damn, both vehicles met all the same emissions and safety regulations etc and were about the same price.

Just 6 years later in 1999, the Honda S2000 was released which has a 2.0L 4cyl that makes 240HP...breaking Porsches record for mass produced engines at 120HP per Litre N.A. No turbo/superchargers. Mustang GTs were still at only 260HP NA in a 4.6L "modular" V8 at the turn of the millenia...for a whopping 54HP per liter. Less than half what the Honda made, in a car that cost roughly the same amount of money. Again, American engineers and car companies just didnt give a crap. Keep selling us slow, heavy, thirsty cars that were heavy and couldnt stop quickly either...for the same price as japanese cars that were superior in every way honestly. Yaaaaaay Detroit. Our truck engines were the same engines by the way. Thirsty and weak.

Now is the Glory Age of American muscle. Finally. A 2024 Mustang GT makes 486HP from their 5.0L V8. Almost 100HP per liter. Took them an extra 30 years but they are finally catching up to Honda. With nearly 500hp, a new GT will go 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. Thats fast. Really fast. About half the time a GT with a 5.0L V8 took to do the same back in 1993. With more than twice the power. Those of us who were young in the 70s, 80s, 90s and even 00s really got crapped on by Detroit.

Went to get my tire patched...D.T. only uses patches, won't plug. He checked my other front tire because he thought it looked to be a few pounds low. Turns out, i had a drywall screw in 1 of them, and a roofing nail in the other. Both of them close to the sidewall...so they replaced both of them for free. Only have to pay to put insurance on the 2 new front tires. $15.85 cents per tire. After the government thieves take their cut, the total was $37.20 for 2 brand new front tires with insurance on them as well. Cant beat it with a stick IMO. Love their customer service, too. One of my favorite companies.
Funny how people have different experiences with places. I hate that place and will never return. 😅

flipping birds or agreeing with Marcus post?
Oh it's birds, haha any mechanic worth their salt could take a 70s or 80s V8 and have it pushing 400 hp for a reasonable price. It was the government that took the power out of those engines with all the smog bs and other environmental limiters.
I'm just messing with MVols.
