Those 70s, 80s, and 90s American "sports"cars were absolute crap. Partly because of the EPA/lefties and partly because the big3 automakers just suck. Being that I turned 16 in 1993, the government and Detroit conspired to make sure the weakest, slowest cars were made and on the road in my youth. Bastards.
That picture shows a 5.7L (350cid) V8 engine that only managed 200hp. While that is absolutely preposterous all by itself and should piss everyone off, the figure was also crankshaft HP...in a rear wheel drive American car...so on a Dyno it likely put about 170HP down to the actual wheels. 15% loss due to friction,/physics. So 170HP in a 3000+lb car. Slow as crap. In 1993 when I turned 16, a Mustang 5.0 was sadly the standard by which cars were measured. If it was faster than a 5.0, it was "fast" to us...if not, it was slow. A 1993 Mustang GT 5.0 (302cid) V8 made 235hp. Crankshaft. So maybe 200HP at the wheel in another 3000+lb sled. Slow as crap. Thats 47HP per litre by the way. Crankshaft. Forty seven HP per litre of displacement. In 1993. Thats embarrassing. A Honda Prelude from the same year made 190HP from just a 2.2L 4cyl engine that was also naturally aspirated. The 4cyl Prelude was actually faster...0 to 60 in 6.3seconds. No turbo. Just engineers that gave a damn, both vehicles met all the same emissions and safety regulations etc and were about the same price.
Just 6 years later in 1999, the Honda S2000 was released which has a 2.0L 4cyl that makes 240HP...breaking Porsches record for mass produced engines at 120HP per Litre N.A. No turbo/superchargers. Mustang GTs were still at only 260HP NA in a 4.6L "modular" V8 at the turn of the millenia...for a whopping 54HP per liter. Less than half what the Honda made, in a car that cost roughly the same amount of money. Again, American engineers and car companies just didnt give a crap. Keep selling us slow, heavy, thirsty cars that were heavy and couldnt stop quickly either...for the same price as japanese cars that were superior in every way honestly. Yaaaaaay Detroit. Our truck engines were the same engines by the way. Thirsty and weak.
Now is the Glory Age of American muscle. Finally. A 2024 Mustang GT makes 486HP from their 5.0L V8. Almost 100HP per liter. Took them an extra 30 years but they are finally catching up to Honda. With nearly 500hp, a new GT will go 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. Thats fast. Really fast. About half the time a GT with a 5.0L V8 took to do the same back in 1993. With more than twice the power. Those of us who were young in the 70s, 80s, 90s and even 00s really got crapped on by Detroit.
