Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Some of the national media have dropped Pearce from a #1 or lottery pick to a mid-first rounder because his sack totals are lower so far this season. Those who study our defense know that he only played about 10 snaps a game vs our 3 blowout opponents, and only played about half the game vs OK and 2/3 at most vs Ark. He has still greatly impacted the games with TFLs, hurries, etc despite frequent double teams.

Vs Bama he finally got to REALLY shine, and we don't win without him. That fumble forced AND recovered was a matter of him simply taking the ball from Milroe, whose arms are huge in their own right. Pearce just violently took the ball from him though, because he wanted it more. It was beautiful to behold. That wasnt all Pearce did though check out this stat sheet:

On 32 pass plays Pearce:

2 sacks
1 hit
6 TFLs
18 pressures

PLUS the 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered, and any tackles he had on other running plays. He was absolutely dominant for the 1st time this year. Since he got his 1st sack @Ark it seems like he has relaxed and gotten in his groove. Right on time IMO. Great job by Coach Garner not playing him all the time thru the easy portion of our schedule and wearing him out. Our Dline has gotten better every game this year and is clearly dominant. This week D. Bailey really stepped up and had his best game as a VOL.
I think it was similar in the past too, he really only got stats in the SEC games, 6.5 of his 8.5 sacks in the regular season were against SEC teams. This year I think he is averaging 1 per game against SEC. This year all 3.5 of his sacks were in SEC play.

he clearly impacts just about every play he is in on. He still has some issues not holding the edge, but he is much better than he has been in the past.

what happened with West? I remember him going down, don't remember if he came back into the game or not.

Nothing dirty about that play, that's football.

I am not saying it should have been a flag...none of the targeting BS was a flag when I played through HS ball. It was definitely a little dirty though IMO, and extremely poor technique. He was trying to hurt the other kid, not tackle him. You're not even supposed to look at a players upper body when you tackle them...thats how you get "faked out your drawers" or "your ankles broken"...you're supposed to keep your eyes (and helmet, shoulders) focused on their waist. The waist never lies. If it goes left, the player is going left. If it goes right, he is going right. Proper form tackling is to put your hat on his waist, and use your arms to lift his legs while continuing to drive your own legs through the enemy and into the ground behind him. Its taught that way from peewee league thru HS ball. Poor tackling teams don't wrap up like this, and go around launching their bodies thru the air head first trying to get that big Sportscenter hit and hurt somebody. I love a big hit as much as anyone, the ones that sound like a car wreck from the stands...but hitting somebody in the head 4 or 5 feet off the ground is dangerous to both players, and more likely to miss than succeed. You can bet that the other team is gonna take every opportunity to give that shot right back to him as well. Thats football though, and i am with you in that I dont want to see sissyball. Maybe you're right and its not really dirty...just questionable and provokes more hits like it...REALLY dirty is what that UGA lineman did to dive into our UT players legs from behind at the whistle and put that DT out for the rest of the season IIRC. THAT BS was dirty, and should have resulted in consequences. Extreme violence goes on at the LOS on pretty much every snap though, most people are just oblivious.

I think West is OK. He had some standout plays too, and was a beast earlier this season. Even Hubbs said that Bailey had his best game as a VOL...he was everywhere. Here are Bulls pass rush stats for the game, not sure where he got them from though:

Sorry to hear about your mom ND. God bless you and your family bud. I have spent so many nights sleeping in a chair at UT hospital, I cant attempt to count them. I hope that everything goes well on your trip bud. My moms next door neighbor is a BnB rental on the bottom floor in Alcoa only about 15mins drive at most from UT hospital. If you end up needing another place to stay, let me know and I will put you in touch. Hope everything goes as well as possible man. If theres any way I can help gimme a shout.
Thanks Marcus - appreciate you man.

My 96 yr old mother just went into UT hospital and I need to get to Knoxville next week to start handling her affairs. One of my brothers who works contract in Shelby, NC is planning to drive over from there on Saturday Nov 2 but we have not tried yet to book a hotel. Knowing the KY game is that weekend, we're probably SOL for getting a hotel room in Knoxville. I'm thinking about renting a cabin in the Seymour - Sevierville - Pigeon Forge area for about a week starting Nov 1. Any recommendations?

Sorry to hear about your mother, will be thinking of you and yours.

I would recommend getting an airbnb in Maryville, honestly. It would be cheaper and more accessible to the hospitals in Knoxville via Alcoa HWY.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Having lost both of my parents in the last few years I can relate. Prayers your way.

Yeah thats what my moms next door neighbor does. Rents hers thru airbnb. She has a couple new cars she rents also...which I didnt even know was a thing until my mom mentioned it. Almost everyone on my moms street is retired though, so i guess it makes sense as a good way to supplement SS income etc. Especially during football season. I have absolutely no idea how much she charges for any of that stuff though. We have only ever stayed at airbnb in Florida on vacation...and my wife handled all the reservations. I just pay for stuff, and nod "yes" a lot. You'd think that would be a can't miss strategy for peace...strangely it doesn't always work out that way when dealing with crazy women though. Lmao

I dont know why this stupid crap double posts sometimes.

Fun stat of the day:

Coach Hype has more wins over Bama than Kirby McSuperCuts. GO VOLS

Other random thought: We all were optimistic here in the PF when Coach Inge was hired, for me it was because the guy is clearly intelligent and a good communicator. What he has done with the LBs in only 1 offseason is nothing short of amazing. Despite losing Pili as his defensive captain and leader, his LBs were HUGE in the last 2 games and have made stops time and again on 3rd and 4th down. Coach Inge has Carter and the other young LBs playing extremely well. That points to great teaching and development. Seems like kids and recruits love him too. I think that ones a homerun hire. If Banks leaves (we better offer him a buttload of $$$) then Inge may be next DC? He is Co-DC now like he was at Washington or no? Wonder how it felt for him to beat the Bama staff that he was supposed to be on...he left them last minute to defect to the Promised Land at UT?

I'm really sorry to hear about your mom. My wife's dad is 96 and over New Years he was in the hospital for what my wife thought was a fall. When we went in to see him it was obvious he was sick and hadn't broken anything. We found out two days later he had RSV, Covid, and pneumonia. He bounced back well ... my wife didn't. 96 year olds can be pretty tough people. Neither of my parents are still living, and many times over the past years, I find myself wanting to ask them about things in the past. Make the best of your time with your mom. Wishing the best for you and for her.

supercuts kirby.

That's good, imma use that.

The wife just sent me a couple of YouTube links - not as interesting as this piece but good. She knows how much I like bagpipes and have struggled for years to play. Anyway these guys have an interesting approach and made me first wonder how the piper plays so effortlessly. Turns out he uses electronic bagpipes - they've become very popular with performers - no more gut buster reeds to blow or keep in tune. Typical pipes have four sets of double reeds that all want to go their own way when the temperature and humidity change (like when they are being played) - not to mention the air volume it takes to keep them all working. The piper doesn't use the conventional bagpipe finger techniques - looks more like how a whistle would be played. Still very entertaining.

Thanks AM64. I spoke to her today for the first time since she went in. Her Case Manager said she’s been diagnosed with dementia which is no surprise at that age although she does seem to have a cogent thought process. I probably have a touch of dementia myself and I’m “only” 70 (in January).

They also diagnosed her having a heart murmur which if she were younger might be a candidate for a pacemaker…
