not really in line with the somberness of your situation, but you are right about it being hard to tell with dogs. my fiance's parent's dog will milk it whenever he can. He will wimper and limp until you give him what he wants and then zip off like a puppy. he got a cut on one paw that needed treatment, afterwards he would limp around holding one paw in the air...it was the wrong paw. he was good about being dramatic.
