Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Just go ahead and change all the plugs and coils.

If i was rich I would have changed all the plugs and coils today while i had everything apart. Would have been about $500 in parts though, with my son just getting married I dont have that much money for a non-emergency.

Oh.. the check engine light did come back on tonight on the way home from church. So i do have to take it all apart again tomorrow and change that coil pack on the #1 cylinder. Oh well. It will go much faster the 2nd time.

I understand. I liked the older ignition coils better where you just change the one.

Me too. Coil>distributor>wires>plugs. The old way was much simpler and easier to work on.

I actually researched it once, when they first went to coil packs. Best I could gather, it enables engines to rev up to higher RPMs is the real advantage. Without having timing issues. Because engines necessarily have sparkplugs in different locations (,on each cylinder) different length plug wires came from wherever the distributor was located to each plug. If youve ever replaced wires on a early 90s or older V8...you know exactly what I mean. You only take off 1 at a time to make sure you replace it with the correct wire because each of the 8 are different lengths. Since the bursts of electricity have to travel different distances, the longest wire used basically dictated how many RPMs the engine could run without the timing messing up. When they put individual coil packs on each cylinder, controlled by computers, todays V8s in mustangs etc can rev to 8000RPM redlines which is almost twice what redline was in 80s V8s. Some modern V8s can rev to 9000+ RPMs and still be reliable enough to go in production cars with warranties. It also makes them able to run more efficiently I believe.

Its way more expensive to work on/replace though just in parts. A coil pack for each cylinder is expensive. Much more labor too...as illustrated in my 1st post on the topic above. Changing the 1 coil or even coil and distributor was much much easier. Changing plugs was much easier too. I prefer the old setup like you do bud. Back when there was very little that I could not repair cheap under the hood of my cars and trucks. They intentionally make vehicles difficult and discouraging to work on, because they want everything including routine maintenance to be done at the dealership. From new types of fasteners and specialty tools needed, to parts that are made only to be replaced rather than rebuilt or repaired like their predecessors...its all intentional. Total BS intended to keep owners from fixing their own vehicles. American manufacturers are usually better about this than foreign cars (,except Cadillac) but they pull the same BS as the foreign car builders from time to time. It sucks. I will never pay anyone else to fix something if I can do it myself...unless or until I am feeble and unable.

Listen to this thing. Best sounding side barrel exhaust I have ever heard.
^^^ thats the most badazz Chevy. I hate GM products usually, but I LOVE this car. Its a 1963/64. Ground up custom everything but was built from a 1964 body. Mimic 63 split rear window is beautiful IMO.Manual transmission, 530HP, 540lb/ft..NA, no super/,turbocharger...AT the wheel. (645 crankHP) 6 piston caliper brakes front and rear. Ridiculous rims, tires (345 rear tires) This is an amazing car. Just the body/paint work is incredible not to mention the $100k+ in high end parts underneath that skin. My Dad had a 67 or 68 vette in the same body style when I was a baby. Small, light cars with big nasty V8s in em. 60s are the prettiest vettes made IMO. The 70s, 80s, and 90s were all bigger, heavier cars than these. What a beautiful machine.

*** skip to 23:00 mins or so to hear this thing open up when the young guy who built it is driving. Its FAST.

Oh, and replaced that coil pack today. Its running smooth again finally, no lights. Thank you Lord.

Holy Chit! When’s the last time we won a Saturday ballgame?

Yesterday was painful. Stranded 5 or 6 guys on base in the 1st 3 innings alone. Can't believe they just kept rolling Phillips out there to pitch in the 5th and 6th innings...you could tell he was cooked. Stupid move IMO...where the Hell was Russell? He is supposedly back to full strength and ready to pitch? Coach still saving him for late season/playoffs run I guess.

To answer your question, we are what 1-4 on Saturdays? At least 1-3 in SEC play. Exception being that 1 sweep? Gotta do better. This teams defense is nowhere near last years team. Had 3 errors causing 4 runs. Last I saw UK had 10 stolen bases in 6 or 7 innings. Catcher/Phillips never caught one of them. 10/10 on steals. I quit watching in the 7th...

We aren't doing any better today. Way to many errors and missteps.
Go Vols!

So, for the first time in 19 years, I am working a job that isn't related to hospitality.

Landed a fully remote gig at a network operations center. Didn't think it'd happen so fast after I decided on the career change but funny enough someone I knew through the bar world got my foot in the door.

Perfect timing. Happy for you, pimpin.
