It seems to me that the fluidity of the board is gone. We've signed so guys. I have to think that with the addition of the new OL coach that should get folks more interested. Any shot at all of S. Henderson shocking the world? I heard he was a big bears fan?

Okay. So I and others do not have to answer this question over and over and over here is the final word on how the numbers work out this year.

We can sign a maximum of 30 players in this class. That means that the list of our 2010 recruiting class can have up to 30 names on it.

The maximum number of prospects we can enroll into school at UT this year is 27. That's 25 for this class plus 2 of the guys that are already here count towards last year's class.

The reason you would sign more than 27 is that there may be one or two guys who do not qualify and they would be sign and place candidates.

Right now we are sitting with 25 commitments. I expect at least 1 of those to switch their commitments to another school which will open another spot.

Now one more time a little slower. Lol jk

That means that they count towards the number of the class, the sign an LOI, but do not qualify for whatever reason to enroll at UT. Therefore, they either have to go to JUCO or a PREP school.

But the LOI means nothing. The recruit will be free to go where he wishes after he becomes eligable either through a prep school program or a Junior college. We would have to recruit him again but it usually give u an inside track..

I guess I am confused. The NCAA limits the total number of scholarships to 85. They also limit the number of scholarships in any single year to 25. However, teams may count early enrollees toward the previous year, provided the new total for the previous year doesn't exceed 25. I suppose if a team signed zero one year and had 25 early enrollees the next year, they could actually sign up to 50 in a year. The SEC implemented the "Ole Miss" rule to limit the total, including early enrollees, counting toward a previous class to 28. I didn't count the number the number of returning scholarships for next year, but I would be shocked if 28 players put UT over the 85 limit. And Volquest only lists us with 22 players for the 2009 class.

Here is the general rule citation for the 2009-2010 year from the NCAA:

15.5.6.1 Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] There shall be an annual limit of 25 on the number of initial counters (per Bylaw 15.02.3.1) and an annual limit of 85 on the total number of counters (including initial counters) in football at each institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, 12/15/06)

Here's the NCAA rule citation allowing some early enrollees to count toward the previous year:

15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering after Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received.

The NCAA does allow conferences to impose more restrictions. Here's a link to the "Ole Miss" Rule that the SEC implemented: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect...cks+football+signing+limit_10_22_09_ncaa_news

I am probably overlooking the reason for the the Vols being limited to 27 this year, but I just don't see it. Can someone please explain why we are limited to 27 instead of 28.

Sab...I know you probably know the answer...so please explain so I can understand.

Wow, dude. That was a whole lot just to ask a question.

It's really simple. We had 23 prospects enroll last year when James Green dropped off so we can count 2 of our early enrollees toward that class. That gives us a clean slate to add 25 more guys maximum of 28 which gives us a grand total of 30.

The number is 30. It was 30 4 months ago and it's still 30 today.

1. What benefit is it to sign and place someone? They are free to sign later with anyone else.

2. Does Matt Sims count against our 25?

3. Who, that we have signed, does not count against our 25? Anyone?

4. We can sign 28...but only "take" 25 of them. What happens if all 28 qualify?

There isn't a huge benefit. A lot of JuCos encourage their prospects to go to the school they originally committed to. If you have a relationship with the coach already your chances are better and if you are signing and sending kids to a certain coach on a regular basis, obviously that helps.

More often, especially with the new rules, you sign guys hoping they qualify. But if you have 5 guys that are really close, it could be a good idea to sign a couple extra if they are the right guys.
