A player just told me that Dooley got emotional when he broke the news to the team. #Vols #Dooleytried

I'm sure he did. You can say a lot of bad things about Dooley's coaching, but I don't think you can say he mailed it in. I think he gave this his best effort. It just wasn't good enough.

In all honesty, this is a commentary on what happens when somebody gets a higher profile job too soon. He just wasn't ready for it. Maybe he would have been better if he had stayed at LaTech for a few more years to learn the craft, but we'll never know.

No need to wallow in the past. It is time to look forward to Gruden 2013--hopefully.

Interesting story, and I hope it is true.

I do have one question. What is the purpose of smoke screens? It seems like that takes a lot of energy and serves no real purpose. If this was a hush deal, it seems that the few power brokers involved could keep it hush. This isn't a story of international intrigue or spy v. spy, this is about a new head football coach. I find it difficult to grasp that the effort of creating a misinformation campaign would be necessary or worthwhile. Help me understand that because I might just be missing something...

Not that I have any insight into this, but I assume that letting rumors fly takes some heat off of Gruden himself. I do think people tend to get into conspiracy theories with these type things, and it just builds and it happens. But, one, UT has not publicly announced Dooley as gone (even though we know he is), and two, Gruden doesn't want to be in the limelight until he has to be. Thus, you create some fodder for people to talk about.

I do believe that Hamilton liked to create stories so that people weren't dialing in on his search. He even went as far as to use a plane that wasn't a UT issued plane.

"You know, this gritty kid from the streets of Harlem really creates excitement,
$4 million a year, that's true, but he earns every nickel of it.
Look how he shakes off four or five defenders with ease.
Fletch ... he truly defines grace under pressure."

Geez, some sources say the players have been told other sources say they haven't. This is the biggest fiasco ever. I really hope Gruden is at the end of this f'ed up rainbow because this whole thing from the MSU game on has been a disaster.

Ain't that a mouth full? Im with you!

If the players were told it was this afternoon, that is unless they are telling them one at a time. I have now heard from 4 different players-players families that say they do not know. They even waited around campus yesterday waiting to be called into the rumored meeting only to never happen.

One of my co-workers has gotten two texts this afternoon asking if he has heard anything about an impending press conference this afternoon-evening, sort of weird given who he is. I cannot imagine allowing Dooley to have his noon presser, state he is not fired, only to announce it the same day lol.

Per Erik Ainge: Dooley won't be officially fired until Hart has his replacement signed to contract. That is still being processed. When that happens Dooley will be fired and the new coach will be announced. Ainge says Hart doesn't want what happened on the last two hires where the coach left before we had the new coach signed. As a result the first replacement choices backed out and we were left with not so desirable choices (Kiffen and Dooley).

Found this in the FF. The bolded part makes me wonder if we are in the process of getting a deal done soon.

I agree and I don't get into degrading Dooley but to each his own. The pictures of him on the crutches and in the wheelchair bother me but I am a female soo.. I am believing for a great coach.

Appears today is shot. Unless Dooley finds a way to lose to Vandy before Saturday which I think he might be capable of doing.

I am with you. It sure doesn't seem like the right hand knows what the left is doing, which is par for the course when it comes to the UT administration.

It doesn't give me supreme confidence that they can close the deal even if Gruden is begging for the job.

I'm a veteran and saw the add for Applebee's offer. Even though I have my VA medical card (with Picture ID) to show proof, it would feel awkward to come in and freeload, even though they offer it. I'd say most vets would feel this way, too.

Most true vets would feel awkward about taking the free meal that a lot of places are offering (though I only saw a TV commercial from Golden Corral)?
Perhaps I misunderstood, or perhaps I'd have to be a vet to understand.

you might be right but it just seems that the Gruden to (insert NFL or NCAA team here) rumors are so rampant that no smoke screen is needed and could actually backfire.
