No, this isn't the lowest point in UT history. The lowest point will come next season when we go 4-8 and finish outside the top 30 in recruiting.
God.. I hope not. That Vandy game was my low water mark.
Some things to be optomistic about -
I think (excluding Gruden) the other candidates that turned us down (and we don't have proof they were even talked to :no
could very well have the potential of being Dooley 2.0, maybe moreso than Jones. Jury is out.
It's an upgrade. How many times did we jump offside with 3rd and short under Dooley, or have to call a time out defending an extra point because special teams couldn't the the right number of guys out there on the field.
Thats the kind of crap that made UT football so hard to watch lately, and maybe Jones can at least burn a time out when he's got the ball and 2 left with the game tied and 35 seconds left. A high school coach should be able to navigate in those waters. So expect an improvement.
How many more years till we can compete with the teams (that we once belonged with) with the stature of Bama, Florida, Georgia?
We need at least 2 good years of recruiting classes, and a few victories. Also, teams on top don't stay there forever - this stuff is cyclic. Time travel backwards and be a Bama fan around 2000 or so. Dark days then in Tuscaloosa, or Florida during the Zook years.
We'll be back. Maybe not right away, but at least (for the reasons stated above) I feel we've upgraded. Not to the Gruden standard by any means.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Gruden would have shot us out of a canon though.
Hey.. Maybe Jones will do OK until the Peyton's NFL career gracefully fades into the sunset and he will return to once again lead us to victory. He's smarter about football than even Gruden and his ties to the VOLS are MUCH stronger. God I hope I live to see that!
