Official Jon Gruden Thread XVI

I get the feeling he did not win the presser I was not able to watch it. Objectively how did it go.

Honestly, I like him better now. Now I got out of the house and had some time to cool off too then came back home to see the presser. I like his energy, confidence, and ability to have a plan in place and drive that plan. I'm not sure Dooley ever had a real plan.

Dave Hart when asked about Gruden

I think bcarter's final realizations about Gruden were correct. Gruden was never seriously in play. He might have received some early overtures and shown some interest, but if he truly wanted the job, he would be the coach.

I think we will see a marked improvement in this team next year and 6-8 wins (Oregon is tough and one of our out of conference games). I don't think Gruden, Gundy or Strong would have increased that expectation.

Just think... we could have been introducing Jon Gruden as our new coach. That would be a WOW hire.

I have to admit that this guy has a great first impression.
I'll buy in...but he has a serious uphill battle coming.
I just hope his ability matches his confidence.
He's a JV guy who just stepped into varsity ball.
Best of luck Coach Jones and Go Vols!
Button the chinstraps and lets see what you can do!

No, this isn't the lowest point in UT history. The lowest point will come next season when we go 4-8 and finish outside the top 30 in recruiting.

God.. I hope not. That Vandy game was my low water mark.

Some things to be optomistic about -

I think (excluding Gruden) the other candidates that turned us down (and we don't have proof they were even talked to ) could very well have the potential of being Dooley 2.0, maybe moreso than Jones. Jury is out.

It's an upgrade. How many times did we jump offside with 3rd and short under Dooley, or have to call a time out defending an extra point because special teams couldn't the the right number of guys out there on the field.

Thats the kind of crap that made UT football so hard to watch lately, and maybe Jones can at least burn a time out when he's got the ball and 2 left with the game tied and 35 seconds left. A high school coach should be able to navigate in those waters. So expect an improvement.

How many more years till we can compete with the teams (that we once belonged with) with the stature of Bama, Florida, Georgia?

We need at least 2 good years of recruiting classes, and a few victories. Also, teams on top don't stay there forever - this stuff is cyclic. Time travel backwards and be a Bama fan around 2000 or so. Dark days then in Tuscaloosa, or Florida during the Zook years.

We'll be back. Maybe not right away, but at least (for the reasons stated above) I feel we've upgraded. Not to the Gruden standard by any means.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Gruden would have shot us out of a canon though.

Hey.. Maybe Jones will do OK until the Peyton's NFL career gracefully fades into the sunset and he will return to once again lead us to victory. He's smarter about football than even Gruden and his ties to the VOLS are MUCH stronger. God I hope I live to see that!

Hart is taking questions now, First question was about Gruden. He said he reached out to Gruden in the beginning and Grudens agent said he was not interested.

Not a great speaker but he may be tired, or overwhelmed or both. Lots of word confusion and misstatements. I did not find him endearing but he did not make me any more pissed off than I already was before the presser started.

The biggest positive I take out of this guy is he is NOT Dooley.

How far will that take us? Not sure. Just have to hope for the best.

Imagine the difference in excitement level and tone of fan base with a Gruden or Grudenesque hire. Compare that to the sense of anxious/cautious optimism you see now.
That it what the Grudenites were fighting for.
And pray this guy end up being!

Hart just said CBJ let them mic him up as soon as he got off the plane. Hart goes on,. "this kind of openness is refreshing."

Shot at Dooley IMO.

I think Gruden told himself that if the Jon Gruden thread on VN gets to XVII before another coach is hired...I'm in at UT.

So if you want to know who cost us HC Jon Gruden...look in the mirror fellow Grudenites!

This is my last post in this epic thread as I leave for vacation soon and expect this to be gone when I return.

Thanks for the great times guys! It was a lot of fun being full grude with all of you smokescreen seekers.

FWIW - I'm still 100% full grude and look for him to be named by Christmas!! ;)

OG's - I'd love to hear the full story sometime. Sounds like there was more to the story than the Grude 'not having interest'. I'll continue to trust you guys wholeheartedly... as long as I like what you're saying :D

I sure as hell hope Jones gets this program moving. I don't think this is the best hire Hart could make, but who knows. I'm interested to see what kind of recruiting we get from him over the next two months. Getting a fantastic dual-threat QB is beyond critical.

This!!! I actually started to feel sorry for the position he finds himself.

But he and Hart clearly both belonged in each others mutual admiration society.

Still wondering where the boosters were.

If we hear someone screaming in the back trying to break into the press conference it will be Stephen Hargis.

Hart keeps saying "We talked about that at great length".

did I miss something, but I thought the first time they talked was last night?

what is a "great length of time", Mr Hart?
