They were number 1 and 2? Hockey must be different. Shouldn't most 1 and 2 teams meet in conference finals ?

Yes, they should. Expansion teams also shouldn't get to handpick a playoff team...yet here we are.

Essentially, teams just got to protect a certain number of players but the players left unprotected were available for Vegas to choose from. There were certain stipulations but that is the gist of it. Its how they ended up taking players like 20+ goal scorer James Neal from us.
