You might want to check out the Sig 320. And unless you're married to the .40, I'd look at a 9mm.

That .40 is only good for added recoil impulse.

I'm not married to anything right now but would prefer to keep it at $500 or less

If you are worried about that go with a shotgun. In the heat of the moment you will miss unless you are well trained.

I already have a shotgun. A 20 gauge Remington my late grandfather gave me. Great condition but only holds 3. Want something that I can also carry since I have a CC permit

For a CC weapon a you can't go wrong with a Ruger LC9 especially at it's price point. I generally carry one or in bikini weather a Ruger LCP380.

I have a use for it. I have a 6.8 upper on the way also.

I bet you'll get more use out of that 6.8 for hunting and whatnot.

When you get it, I'd also suggest getting an H2 buffer and a Springco Blue recoil spring. Really smooths it out.

Check on that 320, I think you'll like it. Plus it's modular so you can get the compact lower without having to buy a new pistol.

The XD? Good pistols, just a little larger than some. Has a way higher bore axis than other pistols, but not enough to be an issue if it doesn't bother you.

The 320 is going to be way, way, way different than the "Classic" 220 series lines. Like apples to giraffes kind of different.
