I don't know, I expected more from their pitching. their reputation was such that it would be the best or near best ever. We have a lot of dingers.
I also don't think they've been all that smart at the plate- albeit, better than us.
Looked at the stats.
Rod Demonico finished with 34-wins his last season. We've not touched that mark since. That sounds like a Don Devoe type stat.
Of course, that 2007 team underperformed with 3-All Americans on the team.
Last year's 3.41 (I think) ERA was the best since the Delmonico era. Point being, it's taken this long just to get DECENT pitching. I think you'd agree that that ERA was okay in the Delmonico era, but that's middling pitching in the SEC now.
None of us could foresee replacing 3 starting pitchers yet that's exactly what has happened. The battle at 3B is ongoing along with a battle that at this point seems fabricated behind the plate.
The good news is UGA is next.
Speaking of good news, don't you think this series told us a couple of good things?
1) We've struggled on Fridays but it sure looks like we have a very talented Friday night arm.
2) We have the talent for a deep and powerful batting line up.
But we have a lot to improve on to be a contender in the SEC.
I really think the weather interruptions and travel have had a bigger impact on this team than imagined. There's just no substitute for consistent field time reps.
Certainly.
We know our fielding, both in the outfield and the infield is no where near where we need it to be. Case in point, the last single, I think by Rodgers, would have been a double for UF, but because their left fielder made a good play it was a single.
I know some will disagree, but in my opinion, this is not a talent issue. It's also not just a coaching issue. I think it's a "pressing" issue. By all involved. I think the coaches are being too aggressive because they are afraid the bottom of the line up can't produce. I think the hitters at the top of the lineup are pressing for the same reason. This causes the defense to feel like they have to be supermen because the margin for error in terms of runs allowed versus runs scored is so small, or at least that is the perception, when in reality we're hitting okay, at least at the top of the order.
We just cranked a bunch of homers on a team that historically doesn't give them up.
I still think we're okay. I do. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's too early to give up. We need to take full advantage of the home games coming up, if we don't... then I'll be concerned.
I think we are ok as well. I think Marks is going to be solid. If Cox finds himself you now have a solid 1-2. I get Serrano's baserunning philosophy, but we are running into 2 or 3 outs a game right now because of poor execution, and we are doing it at the top of the order to compound problems. That sticks out to me the most.
Cox coming around to last years form would be big, I agree.
I don't really know what I'm trying to get across...I think we are "over doing it" coaching wise. We had a much more veteran squad than UF, yet it still seems like our coaches are pulling all the strings, every pitch, every at bat, the base running, like the players are puppets...we need to loosen up and let them play ball, it seems like we are making it harder than it has to be, if that makes sense... jmo.
