We are now 2 games behind "par" or where I thought we'd be at this point of time.
We were able to do what I thought we'd do with two tough road series at Florida and Vanderbilt. That UGA series is what really grinds my gears and because of it, we're going to need to surprise someone on the road or sweep two series at home.
After next weekend we will have played 3 road series meaning we have far more home games the rest of the way.
HOWEVER, right now, we are not playing well. We compound our defensive errors with defensive lapses of judgment. This is as bad a SEC defensive team as I've ever seen in following the Vols and SEC for 22-years.
Our offense shows glimpses but cannot usually overcome the defense. Our pitching has been good until today.- especially starting pitching but the pitchers make as many defensive gaffes as everyone else.
Right now, if the ball is hit toward anyone but Simcox I have concerns.
This team is packed primarily with juniors and freshmen and the juniors are not doing any better than freshmen except on mound.
If the juniors would play as well as they did last season we'll get better. There's some freshmen (no matter how heralded) that are not ready for primetime.
Right now, our opponents know if they can just get on base, they can run us into the ground as we'll give the extra base or so. Blown pickoffs, catcher tosses into CF, missed cutoffs, dropped tags. The Vols defense is officially low risk, high reward for baserunners.
