Official: UT hires Kim Caldwell as the new coach for Lady Vols basketball

Posts like these always remind me of the Heupel hire and all of those negative comments… maybe just leave it to the guy whose job is on the line to make the right hire.
As pointed by many other posters, White’s job mainly depends on football. This is a high risk- high reward hire for the program but not white. If it works out. He gets to be a genius snd if it doesn’t, the general reaction will be “Oh, well”

Yeah, this hire isn’t going to determine anything for Danny.

750k for five seasons. A lot of chances to make a lot more if the team does well. Tennessee is already saving 350k from what they were paying Kellie. We should be able to get a couple excellent players for that kind of money.
They are paying Kellie $1.1 million a year through 2028 and are adding $750,000 a year for the new coach. How is that saving $350,000? Not asking to be negative. I just do not understand the math. I will note for those who are underwhelmed that reports of the new contract indicate the buyout drops to 50% of base salary April 1, 2025, which means they could move on for $1.5 million total buyout a year from now. I'm looking this as a one-year on the job audition. Pretty smart move by DW.

Well they aren't saving on Kellie but they are only paying Kellie 550 k and total of 2.2 million. Kellie had her buyout cut in half on April 1st that is why he waited until then to fire her.

We should have learned from the past that you don't cut a decent coach unless you got a better one to replace them with ( see Phil Fulmer, Dooley, Kiffin, Cornbread, etc ) We traded a proven winning coach for a maybe good/maybe not so good--lets give her 4 years coach. Not good.
The only think our proven winning coach proved was that she couldn’t live up to the standard Pat set for this program.

If she can't recruit she won't be here very long they won't give her as long as Kellie got to get the program moving in recruiting. I think we need at least a top five portal class would be great to get the number one class. Would also be great to get Nyla back for 2025 and about three great additions with her.

gracias for info. I knew she got extended through 2028 after last sweet 16 appearance but did not know about the reduction. All in all, this seems like a safe move. If it works out, great. If it's a fiasco, it won't cost much to correct and maybe there's a better pool and/or less programs willing to pay big bucks next time.

You're way off. Her total buyout was 2.2 million dollars. They aren't remotely paying her 1.1 million a year for the next 4 years.

While true, if the football team does not make the CFP next year and the basketball team were to not make the NCAA, it would be one of the reasons folks would use to support a search for a new AD.
