Ohio State is Finished

The fact that Ron Zook has had success at Illinois should tell you how feeble the Big Ten really is.

Heck, why not put Jim Donnan at Minnesota and REALLY create a logjam at the top?

Add Ray Goof to the mix at Indiana... and GameDay will be talking about why 5 Big 10 teams should be ranked 1 through 5.

The whole vote for a champion era needs to end.

I didn't watch the game, but that's just crazy.

Juice completed 3 big 3rd down conversions on the drive. A 3rd and 10, a 3rd and 7, and another long 3rd down to seal it late. All with his legs. Not to mention he talked Zook into going for it on 4th down on the Illini side of the field. He also threw for 4 TD's.

Tressel won a national title with the 2002 Buckeye squad. The talent on that team had no business being anywhere near a national title.

That team was loaded with talent...and they got that PI call handed to them.

S Mike Doss (two time All-American, Vikings player)
S Donnie Nickey (Oilers)
WR Michael Jenkins (Falcons)
LB A.J. Hawk (Packers)
K Mike Nugent (played some NFL)
S Will Allen (Bucs)
CB Dustin Fox (played some NFL)
C Alex Stepanovich (Bengals)
QB Craig Krenzel (played some NFL)
WR/CB Chris Gamble (Pathers, still active?)
DL Darrion Scott (Vikings)
DL Simon Fraser (Browns)
TE Ben Hartsock (Oilers)
MLB Matt Wilhelm (Chargers)
DL Tim Anderson (Falcons)
OL Adrian Clark (Played some NFL)
OL Shane Olivea (Chargers)
WR Drew Carter (Panthers)
DE Will Smith (Saints)
DT Kenny Peterson (previously w/Packers, had steriod issues, now FA)

Offensive linemen Rob Sims (Seahawks), and Nick Mangold (Jets) were both backups on the National Championship team.

The 1998 Vols team was better on both sides of the ball. Even the 1998 Buckeyes were better on the both sides of the ball.

The offense was terrible. Martin wasn't outstanding, but he was better than Krenzel. UT had an easily superior running back situation. Peerless Price was better than Jenkins.

AJ Hawk didn't play that much. Cie Grant, who isn't on any team now, started over him. All Robert Reynolds was good for was choking Jim Sorgi in 2003. UT had better linebackers for sure. Will Smith is the only one on the defensive line that has done anything in the NFL. I'm waiting for Nickey to do something in the NFL. Gamble hasn't done anything and neither Dustin Fox.

Maybe so, but that doesn't take away from the talent that '02 Buckeye team had.

They were never that talented. Many made the NFL on hype, but haven't done anything. They also had a lot of talented backups who became better after a couple of years. The offense was abysmal. OSU that year is the only national champion to not finish in the top 10 in either offense or defense.

But anyways, can you tell me a national champion since the BCS started that had less talent?

1999 FSU.

I don't know a lot about the team, but Weinke was better better than Krenzel. Also Warrick was more explosive than anyone on OSU. FSU played in three straight title games, so they had to have been pretty talented. I'm pretty sure the 2000 Sooners were better than OSU. All the champions from 2001 Miami and on were certainly more talented.

Either way, you have to have some very good talent to win. Its not like Tressell guided a group scrubs. Out of the twenty players I listed, 14 or so are still in the NFL. That's very, very impressive.

I'm trying to think of one big game where Gamble did something big as a wide receiver. All of his big moments were at corner.

Weinke was obviously better than Krenzel, but Warrick was overrated. Plus in pre-expansion ACC, FSU had no business not finishing 11-0 or 10-1, with a possible loss to the Gators.

FSU dominated everybody except for #3 Florida, #10 Georgia Tech, and Clemson. OSU had 7 games within 8 points. It takes coaching to survive that. And luck, too.

He caught 31 passes for a 16 yard average. I'm not pimping him or anything, 16 ypc is pretty good.

It is good, but I don't remember getting a lot of big catches in meaningful games. He was always there to make the big play on defense, though.

FSU should have dominated everybody in conference. ACC was quite weaker 8 seasons ago. I cannot even pretend to remember the streath of the Big Ten in 2002, but I can logically assume it had to have been a tougher conference than pre-expansion ACC, with the powerhouses of Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, NC State, UNC, UVA, Duke, Maryland, and Clemson.
