Ohio state wr coach talking about Gaurantano

And I would be willing to bet if JG played under that staff at OSU, he would have had a phenomenal career. I know some Vol fans on here will say otherwise. But believe it or not, coaching matters. Does ANYONE on here think Hooker would have been anything NEAR what he was under Butch? If you say yes you are lying.

Let’s face the facts. JG had better coaching at Bergen Catholic than he did at TN. And that’s a fact. This video says a lot. It says Urban Meywr and his staff thought a lot of JG. That’s not some run Of the mill coach we are talking about. Urban Meyer. Instead of playing under a real coaching staff JG played under Butch and McGump. I hate it for the guy.

You’re delusional. OSU had too much talent at the QB position for JG to see the field minus cleanup duty.

JG had deficiencies that can’t be corrected by no amount of coaching. If they could be worked out they could be worked out in the pro’s. JG could not read a simple blitz, and the game was too fast in the sec for him. Nothing against him, others like Bray have a big arm but bad attitude and wasted time equals missed opportunities. Quarterbacking at a high level takes alot of everything. Good coaching definitely matters but talent and being a leader and being able to improve on you own also helps. JG was making the same mistakes as a senior that he was as a freshman. Some of that has to fall on him as well. But I am much more ready to talk about our quarterbacks and talent in the stable today versus yesterday’s bad times. GBO

Zach Smith is sketchy AF... But nothing he said her was controversial. Smith was the grandson of Earle Bruce (who was infamously replaced at OSU by Knoxville-native John Cooper).
JG was a different kind of QB. He did his job. Not sure Knoxville will ever like it.

While I‘m ducking for cover, I’ll just say this…. JG gave his best to our team regardless of skills or development from obviously a coaching staff that wasn’t on par with what OSU could have provided him.

I personally saw him play twice in Neyland… he certainly had grit from being repeatedly hit as well as some moxie we all like to see in our players.

Despite some boneheaded plays (specifically against Alabama), I have nothing bad to say about him… just wish he could have helped more in getting our program back to where we are today.

Go VOLS!

coaching is to blame for some, but a lot is on him. He was the exact same way when he transferred to Wash. St. some of you guys need to accept the fact that he just wasn’t that good of a QB. Good guy & took a beating while never once complained, but just wasn’t that good of a QB.

Yep this. JG gave everything he had at the position he just never should’ve been the starter. Kid is vilified for doing his best and being tough as hell but he never should’ve been the starter much less for several years.

And yet a pro team wants and has him on roster. They must see something in him for that to happen.

He's a practice squad guy that bounced around multiple teams in his first year alone. Tons of mediocre college QBs go on to be NFL practice squad QBs.

Just think how productive Dobbs would be if he played in Heupel's system. And yest Lyle was a terrible coach.

Lyle is 89-73 overall and with us he won 9 games in back to back years. He is most certainly not a terrible coach. He isn't a good coach either. Sort of mediocre. Much like JG.

My brother lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL so his kids attend the same school as many of the players/coaches’ children. He and his family are invited to many private events, including guests for the NFL drafts, etc since they’ve paid a premium over the past 12 yrs for season tickets - 6 seats located on the first row behind the Jags’ bench.

I say this in that he sees and speaks to many w/in the organization. While my brother is a huge Buckeye fan and Jags’ fan, he is so happy Meyer is gone. I can’t believe some of the stories I’ve heard that occurred when Urban was @ Fl, Ohio State, and Jax. The person on TV isn’t the person on the field or a private event. His ego is second to none and apparently the lack of respect is an understatement.
Always thought he came across as a douche on and off the tv screen.

Idk. I think he benefited from kind of a perfect storm in recruiting a few years as well. In state talent and legacy kids during a few years really gave him remarkable talent. The fact he failed to win the SEC East even in the time Dobbs and Kamara were here makes him seem like a pretty terrible on the field coach. Off the field again I think he really benefited from it being a perfect storm.

He's making his own money instead of collecting SSI or SDI. Surely, you don't begrudge him of that?

I think you have accept the fact there is a good bit of room between, terrible and good. Pruitt and Dooley were terrible HCs. Butch was not good, but he wasn't terrible either.

Well now, if you're on an NFL squad, in whatever capacity, you're not working for free. So he must be good for something.

Being on an NFL practice squad does not make you a good QB. It makes you talented, but there is a vast difference between being talented and being good. No one said JG wasn't talented.

Dobbs did pretty well here, so yes I think Hooker would also have been successful, though not as good as he was with CJH.

Butch wasn't a terrible coach. He was just a garbage human. More NFL players drafted under him than Doofus or Cornbread.

JG just wasn't good. Nothing really to do with coaching. He might have been better in a lower conference, but he was pretty bad at Washington State too.

Jones was a terrible coach. Kicking a Fg from the half yard line in the first possession vs OU proves it. One of the all time stupidest calls I’ve ever seen.

JG was a practice warrior. When the lights came on he wilted, every single time. If you 've watched college football over a few decades you've seen this a million times. Highly talented and ranked player just does not have what it takes. Hence the famous Fulmer quote about "looks like Tarzan plays like Jane." That sums up JG as a college player, looked great every where except game day. He no doubt was a great young man, just stunk The Hill up for his four years on it. No other coaches can't fix what JG had, he was born with it. Go back and watch him snatch defeat out of the bosom of Victory on his bone head improvised QB sneak against Bama. He was an upperclassman when he did that. A 14 point swing on the goal line, we drove it down their throats to get to the goal line, coach calls a running play for an RB that video shows would have worked, JG on his own, tried to hop over the OL and DL out stretching the football with both hands, that gets knocked away for a fumble, Bama DB picks it up and goes 99 yards for a TD. It's just who he was.

OK, keep beating the heck out of that drum.
