I think it is the Eastern Water Snake. At first I thought it was a copper head but I did some research and those water snakes are most commonly mistaken for copper heads due to their size. Most of the other snakes mentioned don't get 3" in diameter as this snake was but apparently the Eastern water snake does. I hear they can be quite aggressive too.

You can see the resemblance to the copper head:

.

Despite being non-venomous, water snakes are very aggressive and I hear their bite hurts like hell.

Yeah more than once I've looked down and had one at my feet or pretty close by. If you're catching fish they will definitely come investigate. Citico is filthy with them, they are all in that riprap on the side of the creek.

I was wade fishing in Kentucky and caught a fish, had one come at me like a torpedo.

Did you get a look at its head? Easiest way to tell if you're about to have a bad day

No. It was tucked in that rock and did not move. If you zoom in tight I once thought the head was visible to the left like it's turned back looking toward the right but I've about decided that thing that looks like the eye isn't.

Another vote for water snake or ,as I call them, poopers. They'll scare the poop out of you until you realize it's not a copperhead.

I had one in a tug of war over a bluegill at a farm pond when I was a kid. I've never seen a snake eat something that much bigger than its head so fast. I always thought they were slow and lumbering when they eat but that fish was ingested in about three or four seconds. FTR snakes are gross

Glad you didn't step on it. Even nonvenomous snake bites can be painful and will put you on a round of antibiotics.

Of the places I've fished Citico has the most snakes by far. Snakes don't bother me but at some point even I'm thinking ok this is too many damn snakes. Especially in the morning those rip rap rocks are prime sunbathing spots to get their day going.

At least there is a good mix of the nonvenomous types. Here in Mississippi it's all water moccasins and gators everywhere!

Had a 3 foot water snake swim by me and my class one day while we were fishing (electric fishing) scared the crap out of us... My teacher wouldn't let me try and catch it
