You know this is probably much to do about nothing, but why even give a very good Florida team more ammo?

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Oklahoma's defenders have had enough of all the questions about the Big 12's shaky defensive numbers this season.

They've also apparently had enough of the Tim Tebow talk.

Oklahoma sophomore cornerback Dominique Franks said during interviews with the media Sunday morning at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa that Tebow would have been no better than the fourth-best quarterback in the Big 12 this season.

"If you look at the three best quarterbacks in the country, they came from the Big 12," said Franks, referring to Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas' Colt McCoy and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell.

"The three best receivers in the country came from the Big 12. The three best tight ends came from the Big 12. So we've faced some great offenses, and a lot of people don't understand that other conferences don't have what we face."

Franks didn't stop there, either. He said the Heisman voters got it right this year in selecting Bradford for the coveted award, no doubt spicing up the prelude to Thursday's FedEx BCS National Championship Game.

"With us being in Florida and playing against Florida, everybody's going to think Tebow should have won the Heisman," Franks said. "But the right person won the Heisman, and we're going to go out there and show everybody the reason why he won it."

The Sooners are ranked 63rd nationally in total defense and 98th in pass defense. Franks and his defensive teammates grew increasingly agitated Sunday as the questions persisted about Oklahoma's defense not being able to hold up against Tebow and the Florida offense.

Franks said the best quarterbacks in the Big 12 were more difficult to prepare for than Tebow, who's passed for 22 touchdowns, rushed for 10 touchdowns and thrown just two interceptions during the Gators' nine-game winning streak.

"Going into a game and knowing a quarterback's going to throw the ball 40 times a game versus coming into a game and knowing he's probably only going to throw it about 15 or 20. ... It makes it a lot harder to prepare for those [Big 12] guys," Franks said.

Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy added, "[Tebow] really knows what he's doing, but I think we're prepared enough that we'll know what they're doing as well as they know it."

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables said he doesn't agree with all of Franks' comments.

"I don't know, maybe it's just a young guy who doesn't know any better," Venables said. "He doesn't watch enough tape. I really mean that. But I think he's going to bat for a lot of guys who he has a lot of respect for."

Venables said that some of Franks' comments might have been sparked by disparaging comments about Big 12 defenses this season.

"Obviously, any time anybody doubts you if you have any competitive fire or competitive nature, you get fired up and excited for that. It gets you to perk up and sit up a little bit straighter in your chair," Venables said. "But still, being mad doesn't make you play better. It's still a process.

"This week is no different than the Big 12 championship or UT-Chattanooga. I believe that whole-heartedly. There's a process you have to invest in. And if you do, usually good things will happen."

Franks said he likes the fact that nobody respects the defenses of the Big 12.

Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes said on Saturday it seemed they put most of the best athletes in the Big 12 on offense and that the defenses looked a step slow.

"We've heard it all year," Franks said. "Like I said, this is going to be our chance to prove everybody wrong."

The Sooners' second-team All-Big 12 cornerback also said he was unconcerned about giving Tebow any extra motivation. Historically, Tebow has played some of his best games after being called out by opposing players.

"No, he said he wanted to face a Big 12 defense," countered Franks, who had four interceptions this season. "It's been great listening to all the comments they've been making. On January 8, we're going to see. Everybody is saying our defense is suspect in the back end. Hopefully, he'll throw me the ball a couple of times, and I can get my hands on it."

Be careful what you wish for

Attention Mr. Franks,

Ole Miss was not impressed with 1 of the 3 best QBs in the country.

What place did Ole Miss finish in the SEC this year??? and they beat a team from the Big 12 that tied for first in the dreaded Big 12 south.....Texas was the best team in the Big 12 this year not OU....Tebow and company are going to have a field day and Bradford hasn't seen defense this fast all year

Ole Miss didn't just win. They easilly handled Tech after a sluggish start. If they played again, Ole Miss would still win.

I didn't hear Franks mention havng to prepare for anyone that could run the ball and retain a two dimensional offense. That might blow his mniature mind.

HA!

Reminds of Florida State's Geno Hayes talking smack in 2007, end result 45-12 Florida and 5 total touchdowns for Tim Tebow. Hayes claimed he was going to "plant" Tebow. Or when Ricky Jean-Francois of LSU said they were going to take Tebow out of the game, and Ricky didn't even show up in Gainesville. End result? 51-21, 3 total touchdowns from Tebow.

Don't motivate this Florida team anymore, or your in for it.

I'm for OU the same way I was for Utah. I don't like our rivals even when they play someone else. UF will benefit much more from another title than UT will by saying "Hey, look, we are in the SEC too! S-E-C!" And we can't really boast to OU, as a conference, about Ole Miss beating Texas Tech. I seem to remember Oklahoma triggering the parental controls on my tv with their beatdown of Tech... Also, "our" middle of the pack SEC team also beat UF. At UF. They stopped the Almighty Teabag.

I wrote an article about this issue if you guys would like to read.

Although he's been dubbed "Superman" by Florida pigskin faithful across Gator Nation, an adequate follow-up to the nickname Tim Tebow earned in 2006 might just be "The Hulk".

Why? Well, you won't like him when he's angry.

Apparently Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Dominique Franks disagrees. When asked about Tim Tebow, Franks said, among other things: "Yeah, I think our Quarterbacks are better," [Referencing the Big XII Quarterbacks in comparison to the SEC's] "..Hopefully he'll throw me the ball a couple times and I'll get my hands on them," and last but not least "..the right person won the Heisman, and we're going to show everybody the reason why he won it".

Take some notes from the young and the restless, Mr. Franks.

Reminiscent of 2007 against Florida State, and this season against LSU, Tim Tebow and the Gators have with them some bulletin board material as motivation against the Sooners, and that's something OU definitely doesn't want and can't afford.

A motivational mastermind, Florida head coach Urban Meyer chopped and pasted a series of articles and comments about his Gators' National Championship hopes in 2006 against Ohio State at their team's dinner table before the game.

As confusing as it might have been to some players, it worked. End result: Gators - 41, Buckeyes - 14.

With the comments made by Dominique Franks, Florida now has some additional motivation to bring with them to Miami against the high-powered Oklahoma Sooners.

But this isn't the first time Tebow has had objectionable comments slung his direction. In fact, it's happened twice, and for that matter, both helping Tebow and the Gators stomp their opponents.

So maybe the average margin of victory against opponents that "smack talk" Tebow is standing tall at 31.5 points, but the stories that Tebow brings with him is even more worthwhile.

In 2007, there were the Geno Hayes comments at Florida State, about "planting Tebow in the ground" and "denying him the Heisman". What happened there, Geno?

Tebow triumphed in this feud, with 5 total touchdowns, and dashed towards the end zone once with Hayes holding on for dear life.

This season, we had Ricky Jean-Francois, LSU defensive lineman, publicly state that he would take Tim Tebow out of the game.

Unfortunately Ricky wasn't on hand for the Tim Tebow show, nor was he on hand to see the Gators roll to a 30 point victory. Tebow sniffed the end zone 3 total times.

Averaging 4 touchdowns per game in these games in which Tebow hears his demise, it isn't looking pretty for Oklahoma right now.

Several fans are hoping that Tim Tebow takes the "Tom Brady approach".

Last season, in an AFC matchup between the Steelers and Patriots, little known safety Anthony Smith proclaimed that his Steelers were going to win. What happened has since gone down into smack-talk infamy.

Smith got burned for several deep touchdowns, and Tom Brady made sure he knew about it.

By the way, Bill Belichick and Urban Meyer are good friends, as if Tebow didn't know how to handle the situation already.

No. 15 for the Oklahoma Sooners better be on his feet, because he's not exactly Joe Namath.

I just hate the way Bob Stoops ran up the score on teams.......just to get the 65 points or whatever. i know CUM is not much better, but this year he could have laid a couple more TD's on the Vol's, but I suspect he knew by looking at the UCLA film that we were pitiful and would likely have to make a coaching change. I hope Florida beats OU by 30.

We could have beaten a lot of teams by more, especially Kentucky. We were up on them 49-0 with about 13 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, but we put in all the mop-up duty.

Probably could have scored another touchdown on Georgia the way Moody was running, probably could have scored a few more on Florida State if the field wasn't so terrible.

But we're more classy than Stoops is. Did the Sooners even take Bradford out once all season?

Agree, and most of us dispise UF second only to Bama.

From what I've seen, half the place is for Florida to win, the other half is for Oklahoma.

At least you guys are pulling for us. I'm registered on a Texas football forum, and they hope that Florida beats OU by 50.

They should try playing a healthy Tech and see what those results are.
Did you not see that same Ole Miss team beat the Mighty fast Gators as well?:)

I can see his point that a throwing QB in a spread attack is in some ways more difficult for the secondary to deal with than a running QB. But, its not like, as he suggests, Tebow will only pass 15-20 times. Gators have been doing that this year because they could -- finally had some productive running backs and a stout defense (not to mention special teams).

But if it turns into a track meet, Florida absolutely can throw the ball 40 times. Done it before and can do it again. And that is what makes it harder I think to prepare for Tebow and Florida, which is to say that the Gators can shift gears as the game demands.

Put it this way: If Tebow ends up with less than 20 passes, its because the game was well in hand throughout.

Most likely a different out come if Crabtree is healthy and three defensive starters aren't out.
I didn't hear you mention which big 12 team offered up rushing and passing problems for those vaunted Ds over there. Maybe you also have the same sense as Franks and don't understand those kind of problems.

PS. Don't offer up that pathetic OSU team as some kind of passing / running threat. That's a joke.

Yep. UF doesn't normally pass more than 20 times because they don't need to.
