Okay, does anybody actually think we beat Oklahoma (poll within)?

Do you believe the Vols will beat Oklahoma this Saturday?

Butch has proven to be a great recruiter and a very detail oriented coach who has yet to win an actually really big game here. he has 4 chances to do that this season starting against oklahoma. usc was a nice win last year but let's be honest it's not a fla or bama or top 5 upset we need one or 2 of these this year to get really rolling to win it in all in 2016 including the battle at bristol.

What? How can you not consider USC to be a "really big win"?

Oklahoma's roster of 116(includes walk-on) is made up of the following:

23-seniors & redshirt seniors
20-juniors & redshirt juniors
34-soph and redshirt sophs
35-fr, and redshirt fr.

we have young talent. they have EXPERIENCED TALENT. They are at home. They will be in the final four selection and want to beat down any SEC team, to impress the selection committee. They will be no letdown, nor letup. their schedule is cupcakes. our schedule is
brutal.
As much as I would like to be competitive, there is no reasonable hope of keeping it within 5 TDs.

What he said.......

I feel better about this game than I did last year going to Eugene.
The "not getting hopes" excuse, for this Vol fan is getting less and less relevant.
My hopes are up.
We gonna spank that Sooner arse! or be darn competitive trying! (voted on competitive)
Vols are getting back!

Sure I believe and I believe the players believe along with the coaches believing in the players....when one stops believing one fails even before the going gets tough.

That said....let's learn from saturdays outing and come back to knoxville safely with no major injuries.

I'm sure this has been noted in a thread somewhere, but I think its interesting to compare the 2010 Oklahoma vs Cincinnati game.

Jones referenced this game in an interview recently and it peeked my curiosity. Cincinnati faced Oklahoma (9th ranked a the time, finished the season as the 6th ranked team) in week 4 of the season. Keep in mind that Cincinnati finished the year 4-8. They were able to take Oklahoma down to the last second and barely lose, 31-29. This was Jones first year at Cincy.

That team almost beat a highly ranked Oklahoma team with the same star players (Collaros & Pead) that UT took to the woodshed the next year. The same UT team that finished 5-7.

Now there were some differences, Oklahoma was not at home for this game. We all know they are much better at home. But they were a ton more talented than Cincy. Maybe Jones can pull this off. No one thought we'd beat South Carolina either.

It's college football, anything can happen. I think we will give them a fight, and while we might not win, I do think we *could* win.

How we can win:

1) Our DL uses their quicks to blow up the run game.

2) OU has a Jekyll & and Hyde QB. They don't know which guy will show up week to week. If the run game is stopped and we can force a throw first offensive scheme, we can get some turnovers and squeak one out.

Most likely we lose by a couple of TDs. It will be revealing, though. Based on how we look, we will know a lot about this football team for better or worse.

Edit: Also think there were some LB depth issues for the Sooners where a walk on had to play already. Not sure if Bajakian can scheme something up for that.

That and the SugarVols should remind everyone that bigger upsets have happened. Sugar Vols were in the 80s and this OU team as well as it's press is very similar to what we walked into in that game. Miami was just there to collect the W and they'd have had the Natty. They gave us no respect - wouldn't even shake our captians hands at the beginning of the game. A funny thing happened that game though. We took control, never looked back and beat them senseless. Final Tenn 35-7 over the U.
Guy
Then in the 90s we had the Miracle At South Bend which was another opponent on its way to a Natty (just like with Miami so much talent was on that ND team it was unreal - we were supposed to be a formality) and yet after getting down 31-0 and ND preparing to kick a field goal a sign of life - missed kick was run back for a TD. We went into the half time 31-7 ND. The game was turned off by fans of both teams convinced it was over, only after halftime it was all Vols. One of the greatest comebacks in CFB history was waged and finally ended when ND missed a FG that would've given them victory. Final Tenn 35 ND 34.

Neither of those Tennessee teams were as talented as their opponents on paper, Miami and ND were absolutely loaded and would rival any historically loaded team in talent, but the Vols were the better team on the field those games and came away with epic wins. We're due for another one of these great games and while it may not happen this game and yes, we could totally get blown out of the water, we can also pull off the upset.

solid post. south bend was INSANE!

By "as close as Ark State played us", I mean that there will be no doubt that OK has won after the first half. I still have trouble calling that a blowout, though.

I don't generally gauge my manliness on whether or not I believe a group of 18 yr olds will or won't win a football game.If they torch Oklahoma, it won't have a thing to do with our pride or pillow biting.

Facts say OU has a big experienced OL and the Vols have a young, quick, inexperienced, undersized DL. OU has a big experienced DL, the Vols have an inexperienced, underperforming OL. OU plays a lot of upper classmen who have experienced a lot of success over their career, UT doesn't. The game is in Norman and will be the first road game for about half of the UT team.

Now, draw your own conclusions but don't question the fandom of rational folks who aren't exactly confident about the Vols' chances this week.

This game will be ugly, but I'm looking forward to the VN threads started around 10 pm Saturday night

Once again, Vol fans are at a pivotal week three in the college football season. It seems that every year we get off to a good start and the hope and expectations of our program become squarely focused on the outcome of this one game. Last year was Oregon, usually its Florida, and this year its Oklahoma. Rather than look at the opponents we face every 3rd game, I say look at the Volunteer team itself. We have been in college football Hell since 07 and frankly it hasn't been since Kiffin that our team was anywhere close to a good football team. Vol fans need to understand CBJ has this program back on track and its only a matter of time until the foundation is set and we can truly compete with anybody. Do I think we can win today? Yes, but the more important question is can you get behind a team and a coach who are better then any team we've had in week 3 in years!! If we do lose today, think of the experience our Vols will gain. This team is for real and you have to believe, win or lose, this game helps our program immeasurably for the future. Get on board, or go the hell away. GO VOLS!!!!
