Oklahoma at Home

So picking OU over Tennessee, the outcome Vegas predicts, means the writer is "smoking crack"? Folks, Oklahoma has a proud football program. While they're young in places for 2024, they're a strong team this year.
Edit- I actually agree mostly with your response I quoted. Nothing crazy there. I was replying to the theme of your posts in this thread.

Man nobody discounts OU and their history. We hate expansion but personally, we couldn’t have added two more worthy or proud programs than OU and uT. Historically and recently you rank in the upper echelon of the SEC and nation.

We get that… that’s WHY your here.

However, you guys are in for a rude awakening joining the sec. The week in week out grind is brutal. I’m not sure it will favor us early in the season as OU will have a chip on their shoulder and something to prove.

I don’t expect a win at OU but man UT will quite likely blow up this season so… sky is the limit.

Don’t convolute the issues being discussed in this thread. There is no disrespect to OU.

Welcome to the SEC!

Imma tell you fellas one dang thing ….. those Okalahoma Sooners don’t take football too lightly. They are a proud bunch with a hell of lot of generational success. They will want to kick some SEC ass more than you can imagine. I expect that place to be insane on Gameday.
It’s gonna be beyond difficult….

That said, Vols …..

Fun Fact, ESPN gives Tennessee a 40 percent chance of winning this game and rates it as the second toughest game on the 2024 schedule behind Georgia which they say Tennessee has a 20.6 percent chance to win.

Alabama is rated the third toughest game to win at 42 percent.

These stats are per the Sports Source telecast yesterday.

I see what you did there with the 'uT'. Good job.

I mean on paper.. don’t you agree with this?

I think like many here we have a very good chance of winning at OU but we probably have a better view of Tennessee watching every little development.

We’d all be shaking our heads if it this game was an expected win at OU with TN as a 60% favorite

Thank you for a reasoned response. I hate it when we get xenophobic and boorish on the board.
yeah, I hate when our fans jump all over visitors. at least when the visitor is being respectable like trj is.

nothing wrong with some southern hospitality. I always want the visitors to enjoy everything but the score board, and that goes for VN too.

Tennessee should be favored in Norman imo. Their weakness is their OL. That’s not a good thing I’m the SEC. Our weakness (or at least question mark) is the secondary. We went 11-2 with an abysmal secondary two years ago.

Question mark equals weakness until proven otherwise. If that secondary gels then solidifies…

…don’t let the Vols hit hawt…

I genuinely hope Bama, Florida, and Georgia fans don’t enjoy anything related to football. Or any sport. I hope they hate their experience in Neyland, I hope they catch a stomach bug from Sodexo products in TBA, and hope they sit behind a row of 7 foot tall people and can’t see the game in Lindsey Nelson.

But yeah, I’m fine with treating Oklahoma with hospitality :)

Not necessarily… Reports out of our camp is that we’ve made some plays in the secondary and are more athletic than last year. Eric Cain has even said he thinks we’ll be better this year. Not that his opinion is canon, but he does follow the team as his job.

Reports out of Norman are saying that their OL might struggle to keep their QB upright.

There’s a difference in the rhetoric being used between the two position groups.

Everyone is so focused on the perceived weakness of their OL that they tend to ignore every other factor in this game.

How about a redshirt freshman QB starting his first true road game?

What about OU's defense? They are expected to be pretty damn good as well.

There are a lot of factors to consider in this game. If we win, it'll be a fight to the very end.

If I told you one team was solid as can be on both lines, and the other team wasn’t, who would you pick to win?

They also have a RS freshman starting his very first game.

Their defense isn’t better than the Iowa defense that we beat the hell out of. That’s something to consider.

It could be a fight to the end. But not necessarily. We’re the team capable of blowing the game wide open. If Oklahoma wins, it’ll be a fight to the finish. Could be for us, too, but it could also be 17-0 before Oklahoma even knows what hit them. We’re the only team capable of whipping the shït out of the other.

before saying anything else, I think Oklahoma should be favored in this game, but it shouldn't be by much, and maybe not for the reasons people think.

Their D and our D match up pretty good, if not our D in front.
Overall Team Defense (Yards), UT allowed 335.2 yards per game, OK allowed 389.4
Scoring D, UT allowed 20.31 points per game, OK allowed 23.46 points per game
Sacks and TFLs favor UT as well
INTS, and turnovers favor OK
They do a better job in the redzone than us.
They are better defending 3rd downs than us, but we are better at 4th downs.

Oklahoma does return 7 defenders vs our 3. Not really sure how they are counting this, because we lost both of our starting LBs to injuries and were having to play back ups, but now those starters are back. DL we only lost Baron and have 3 others returning. DBs are totally new for us.

and they did play better offenses than us. but the overall difference doesn't wipe out the better performance of our D. Our D was 54.2 yards per game, and 3.15 pts per game better. The offenses they faced were 33.9 yards per game, and 2.4 pts per game better than the offense we faced.

tl;dr: I can't wait for the actual game.

This has been an interesting thread. Have not read the whole thing but I am interested in how many SEC titles the Vols have?

Lmao our defense was better than theirs last year, should be better than theirs this year, we’re gonna be much better offensively than the top 20 offense last year. There’s a decent chance we beat the **** out of them.

I agree the OL situation is being overblown here. We play OU early and in Norman so, no huge advantage for us. If I were you, I would be worried more about OL depth.
Yeah, OL issues are generally worse if you are the visiting team dealing with a hostile crowd.

We were well on our way to 40+ vs Bama as well this past year before we absolutely **** the bed in the 2nd half, starting with the 2nd half BS call on kickoff that forced us to start at the 4 yard line.
For me, the most disappointing loss last year was Bama. Florida and Missouri were piss poor too, but we had Bama on the ropes in Tuscaloosa and blew it.

their offense was Top 5.

as their first SEC game it is way too early to assume that they won't be capable of keeping up with us. They can treat it like their one big game a year, and get up for this. if we were their 4th or 5th SEC game, I would probably feel a lot different.

I didn’t mention their offense. OUR offense is what I mentioned. And in Heup’s worst year offensively in his entire career, we were stil top 20.

But since you mentioned it, their offense was top 5 with a quarterback groomed by Josh heupel.

I’m torn on whether it’s better to play them early or later. I agree the wear and tear of an sec season is gonna take the wind out of their sails. But they do have a brand new QB, so playing early benefits us fro that perspective. And yes, I know Nico is green too, and I could be wrong, but I think Arnold is a good qb, while I think Nico is a generational QB. Arnold is bo nix, Nico is Bryce young, in that one will be a great college player one day; the other will start out great from the jump.

If you had to pick a winner by comparing the teams blindly without knowing who they were, you’d pick the team with the advantage at QB, OL, and DL. That’s Tennessee. Everyone talks about “LOS league” and then totally forgets it as BVS creeps in and we start over-respecting opponents that we should beat if we just take care of business.
