Doesn't seem very "wicked smart" does it?

Olbermann contributed to three Dems - POLITICO.com Print View

Grijalva, a prominent liberal who was just declared a winner in his race Thursday night, was in a tight contest against tea party-backed candidate Ruth McClung when he appeared on "Countdown" — one of several appearances he made on the show.

NBC has a rule against employees contributing to political campaigns, and a wide range of news organizations prohibit political contributions — considering it a breach of journalistic independence to contribute to the candidates they cover.

Olbermann, who has become of the most prominent liberal commentators on cable television, has been a critic of the political donations made by Fox News’ parent company, News Corp., which contributed $1 million each to a pair of organizations trying to defeat Democratic candidates.

NBC has a rule against employees contributing to political campaigns,

wonder if that's really a rule or more of a guideline?

I'm sure it will work much like NPR's rules where their employees are held to this standard only when they can apply it to organizations or a political party they are opposed to.

the guy is a tool. i'd love to see someone knock the **** out of his arrogant arse

This statement standing on its own is interesting. Without any other posts we could be talking about Olbermann, Maddow, O'Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh, or Matthews.

I'm sure it wasn't a donation. Probably just a late payment for an appearance fee which is certainly acceptable. Not much different than Auburn helping our Mr. Newton's church really.

his ratings aren't very good. might be a good way for them to void his contract.

He shouldn't be fired... That'd be extreme, just like it was with the NPR guy.

He shouldn't be fired or suspended. The free commercials that he and the rest of the MSM run for the Dems are worth far more than whatever cash he contributed.

NBC is free to have their rules... but the joke in this is that any of their "reporters" have any degree of journalistic independence.

FWIW, we need a partisan press to make sure the truth comes out. I have no problem with him being a liberal and supporting liberals so long as he and the network are honest about their bias.

He gets free publicity and I doubt they withhold his pay. No harm to him. The man is wicked smart I tell you.

I can't wait to see him explain and apologize. BTW, while the offense is negligible this is hypocrisy of the highest order. It is like listening to Limbaugh bash drug addicts.

Perhaps, but I see JW's firing as a a PC thing. If we're talking about a straight up breach of NBC rules then that would be, in my mind anyway, a different animal.

I'd like him to stay on, him being a "wickedly smart" little Lefty nutcase and all keeps him entertaining.

The idea that MSNBC has to somehow defend their image as objective is laughable. We all know what FOX and MSNBC are, let their tv personalities make private donations to whatever campaign they want. The idea that this somehow diminishes the networks credibility is absurd, they are who they are and everyone knows it. Hell MSNBC purposefully fostered and encouraged the left leaning bias it has to answer the FOX/right leaning crowd and its success.

I agree. The charade is silly. It probably wasn't the best idea Olberman has ever had, but if you watched 5 minutes of their election night coverage on Tuesday, the idea that MSNBC has any journalistic integrity is laughable. I've seen biased coverage on FNC and CNN, but never have I seen so many snide comments and out and out disrespect. It was like tuning into a snarky discussion at a country club where everybody agrees.

You know where they are coming from so the slant doesn't matter, but their condescension was nearly unbearable. I think half of their rating was from people like me who tuned in to watch them cry on the inside. Maybe they were just putting on a show for us.

I think you are correct except for your exemption of CNN and other news networks. They are ALL biased. Some are just more subtle than others. MSNBC and Fox are both more honest than CNN, ABC, CBS, et al.

FTR, according to stats on American political views, Fox is the most "mainstream" of them all. This is a right of center country and Fox is a right of center network. ALL of the rest are left of center or sharply left of center. This is why Fox has more viewers than the other cable networks combined.
