Ok, I’ll chime in here with my 2c for the “have to be over .500 in conf play” advocates.
Other than Cinderella tourney winners (I support auto bids) don’t we all want to see the BEST 64 teams in the tourney? Best, most deserving, whatever you call it.
Work with me on an absurd hypothetical here. Math dictates that half of the teams in a conference will be over and half under 500. (On average, dumb stuff happen when 2 teams lose every game or whatnot). So, absurdity: every team in the NFC East would crush any NCAA team (yes, even the Giants.) They are now in the NCAA because why not. The Eagles are in the field of 12. So too the Skins (command strips or whatever). The Cowboys and Giants AREN’T among the top 12? Of course they are. They should be in with a losing record.
What a stupid argument you say. Sure. But SEC baseball is darn near that dominant compared to the rest of the NCAA. The 9th of 16 from the most dominant league shouldn’t be excluded because they are under 500. That’s an arbitrary, and irrelevant to the top 64, stat.
