In baseball, the phrase “putting up a crooked number” refers to a team scoring multiple runs in a single inning, typically more than one. The term “crooked number” comes from the visual representation of numbers on a scoreboard. A “crooked” number is any number that’s not a single digit (i.e., 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.), as opposed to a “straight” number like 1.
So, if a team scores, say, 3 or more runs in an inning, someone might say they “put up a crooked number.” It’s a way to describe an inning in which the offense puts together a productive rally, leading to a significant increase in their score.
