Ole Miss Postgame Report

You gotta dance with who brung ya. It's gotta be Golden. He's struggling, but some of that is based on what cuonzo is asking him to do. When he has to walk it up the floor in a slow down half court game, he struggles. I'm not saying to turn a team of walkers into sprinters, but Golden isn't as bad as he's looked the last month. You've got to get him back at the PG.

trae is slow afoot, can't go to his left, has trouble defending, can't penetrate well, doesn't pass well, can't draw and dish or finish and can't run the pick and roll by pulling up, penetrating, kicking it out or hitting the roller.

That's not what I put at pg either. And CM doesn't ask him to walk it up the court and waste time or walk right into double teams. His lack of effort and intensity is one of the reasons why he was put on the bench.

If we had Maymon it would be a whole different story (I know: but we don't!). Also, Henderson will make lots of money someday. How do you stop someone who can catch the ball, jump real high and shoot, all in one second flat? He was shooting NBA 3s too. We don't have anything to match that (yet).

Henderson is good, but a bit streaky too, as evidenced by his two halves last night. In the second half, I got a small glimpse of what Chris Lofton made opposing fanbases feel nightly. I want another one of him.

I think the question is whether McRae can be more effective as a scorer from the PG position or the SG position? We need his scoring. That much is obvious. Bringing the ball down usually requires him to pass it off in hopes of getting his hands on the ball again from a set play. He can't just bring it down every time and go one on one. His ball-handling isn't worlds apart better than Golden or Richardson either, so it seems like their is no net gain by making him handle the ball out front.

I agree though, that we have no PGs on this team with real high-major talent. I have said it from his freshman year, Trae Golden is not a PG. Even when he was playing well at the position, its just not natural for him and he is not a good enough ball-handler to win with at PG on a team starved for offensive talent.

I hear you, but I don't like relying on Trae or the motion offense to help get Jordan going. He may get the ball on a wing pass 35 feet from the bucket, then see it again with 1 second on the shot clock to throw it at the rim. Imo, best bet is still to do a high pick and roll with Jordan and richardson and roll and space the floor. Saw very little of that last night and scored only 56. Terrible offensive game plan

Cuonzo made some really stupid coaching decisions last night that most high school know better than to make.

1. When you have one primary scorer, Jordan McRae, you don't assign him to the other team's primary scorer in man to man or he will lose his legs chasing him around the court. Lose your legs, lose your shot. Missed his last 2 FTs.

2. McBee should go ahead and sign on as a GA. His career is over. He's a broken player. Why Martin continues to put him on the court to embarrass himself is unexplainable.

3. Trae is also a broken player. This is on Cuonzo. Trae is a bulldog with the basketball, kinda like a rb with the basketball. He's not a passer, doesn't see the court well, and Cuonzo is trying to make him do it. He loses the focus needed to attack the basket and his confidence is destroyed.

I don't agree with a lot of what you have to say usually, but I do here; mainly point #3.

I guess, but at least he was a servicable player last year.

Not much smiling on any of these guys faces this year. Basketball should be fun. Even when we're playing decent there is no fun on our team. We've even started to abandon the customary "5's" between free throw attempts.

I agree. The offense is broken and Martin has done little to fix it. Perhaps it's difficult to fix without some new pieces, but I don't see the missing piece coming in next year. Landry isn't the answer in the times I've seem him play. It's imperative that we find a high-impact TRUE PG. There are so many of them at mid-major schools, so it's not like there is a giant shortage of guys that only attend the elites. They just have to be identified and sought. Ironically, Martin has done a good job of finding some diamonds, but he's found some coal too.

agree on fun. Football team and basketball team haven't been smiling while having fun with great effort in years. When they do, they will win again.

I think the main issue with Trae is that on film, you can figure out how to stop him easily and in 3 years, he hasn't improved any aspect of his game. That's not good and a reason he would look ok last year but not this year.

And again, standing underneath the goal and chasing Henderson is not smart. Give him those baseline runs and force them to get him the ball in the corners or on the baseline. Cut off the passing lane. Chasing him in a circle around picks makes no sense and its obvious he likes to curl to his right. We kept letting him do it. Force him left if he gets the ball and use your length to affect his release.

Don't think Trae's ever had 9 TOs in one game.
OM had 18 points off of TOs.
Surely Martin sees this.
Richardson is almost as bad.
Play Trae and don't screw up Jordy.

Martin on Basilio now...

Said he is gonna talk to SEC officials about the calls, especially jarnells 3 fouls he picked up. Said he feels he's being targeted...

Said he's talked to his staff this AM, partially regrets not getting a T...but says being on the road you wanna put yourself in the best position and is giving them free throws thr best?

Said after watching film this AM he told his assistants he should've gotten thrown out last night.

Says FT and turnovers were dissapointing as well though...

Said he took Richardson off Henderson because he had 4 fouls on him

I've started to see some potential with A Moore as a pg. He sees the court well and moves well without the ball. I'd love for C.J. Watson to spend some time with him this summer.

You can't be serious. Did he really say that? Any of that? If so, oh my.

I wholeheartedly agree. The geezer last night blew his whistle as if he was on the take.

The phantom foul call on Golden during the breakaway layup that put the game away was bogus too. Lots of bad officiating last night on both ends. Lots of anticipated calls which is usually affected by crowds and coaches. Martin needs to light a fire into those officials or he will get no respect from them.

The day he actually starts working the refs might be a turning point for the good. There are a number of coaches doing this continually and getting the calls. I think refs are like some children. If you don't continually call them out on what they're doing, they'll just keep doing it.

Yep. What incentive do they have to please you on a questionable call when you sit on your hands and the other coach is constantly berating you about bad calls? This ain't the church choir and sitting by and turning the other cheek isn't likely to be rewarded by game officials. I'm not suggesting being rude and/or cussing at them, but make your presence known and be demonstrative about it. Make a scene so they remember it on the next call. Don't stand over there and whisper in their ear, "Hey man, I really disagree with your call there."

Lack of effort and energy should land Stokes right beside him. Imo
