I am happy to see Sue Bird going to her 5th Olympics She still playing great ball
she is playing great basketball but there are others playing better..Team USA drove out one of the best point guards in the WNBA in Gonzaga's Courtney Vandersloot because they wont ever give her a chance because Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are the lockiest locks when it comes to an Olympic spots so Vandersloot gave up completely and now plays for a European national team.

someone said Bird and DT could show up in a full body cast and they would still make the roster and honestly thats true.

I am convinced there will never be another lady Vol on the Olympic team because once 2024 rolls around Diamond might never have a chance because they will have a spot for the new shiny player from Uconn.......Paige Bueckers

This is the biggest issue IMO. No doubt that Sue and Diana are great players, but the USA is year in-year out the overwhelming favorite to win, and there is no player development going on. They drove Becky Hammon to Russia, Vandersloot to Hungary, and I'm sure there are other Americans playing for foreign teams because they know that they will never have a fair share because their is some senior citizen playing in her 12th Olympics because of "leadership". And I've always felt this way about the USWNT. They don't give younger players a chance because they are too busy trotting out the same players for 4-3 Olympic games in a row, when they could still win the gold with a younger team. If I'm being honest, Catch shouldn't have been on the 2016 team because she was in the twilight of her career and there were rising stars that should have been there ahead of her. Same with Seimone, and honestly, Taurasi and Bird should have stepped aside then for younger players to take the torch.

I mean, they selected over-the-hill Swin Cash and Ashja Jones in 2012 instead of Nneka Ogwumike. That is inexcusable, and they continue to screw Nneka over, first by leaving her off the 2016 team in favor of Stewart and then this past year for Collier. I think Collier and Stewart are great, but Napheesa didn't pay her dues the way other players have who still weren't rewarded. Like someone else said, she should go play for Nigeria, because Team USA is not worth her time.

Looking forward to 2032 when 50 year old Sue Bird is playing in her 8th Olympics...

Rhyne Howard over Nepheesa Collier?!

I know Collier loses major points around here solely because she went to UConn and I agree that Nneka should have been tapped before her, but Howard wasn’t even the best player in college basketball last year.

But she was in the USA.

How well she is currently playing isn't the core issue as I see it. The United States has a deep pool of talent from which to draw women's basketball players from, and still easily win the Gold Medal. Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi have had their time. They have been rewarded for their great careers and contributions to USA basketball with 4 prior selections to the Olympic team. That should be enough. Within a finite number of Olympic roster spots, there are many other well-deserving American players who should be given a chance to represent their country in the Olympics. It's not like Bird and Taurasi absolutely must be on the team for the United States to win the gold. There is no reason not to spread the wealth around, and select some players who have never been on an Olympic team before.

Swin Cash and Ashja Jones on the 2012 team raised alot of eyebrows they arent even considered WNBA stars wonder how they made the roster.......

truly sad how we never got to see some of these greats you mentioned like Becky suit up for USA

The Ogwumike sisters to Nigeria and they also take the 2021 likely ROY Micheala from UCLA and Arike they would be a lethal team they nearly beat USA in the qualifying tournament in Fall of 2019

Tennessee has had zero 1st team AAs since Candace Parker graduated. Glory Johnson made the WBCA team, but not any of the AP teams. Outside of Parker and Deshields, there are no LVs that are 'star' players on their respective teams; they are the only LVs that deserve mention for the USWNT...and Candace has washed her hands of them while Diamond hasn't done enough to rise above players like Loyd or Atkins to merit serious consideration. It wouldn't surprise me to see Paige in the 2024 Olympics, and she would deserve it if she continues her college career at the pace she started it.

If Tennessee can get back to consistently graduating NPOY candidates and 1st team AAs, then we will see more of them being considered for the Olympics. As it stands, the LV program has not shown that they can develop next-level players since Pat's health declined, and that's up to Kellie to change that.

Swin was a star her first few years and steadily declined after a fast start. I think she got injured and never fully returned to form. I think she earned her spot on the 2004 Olympic team, but nothing after that.

Ashja was a steady, productive player who had a long career, but absolutely did not deserve to be in the Olympics over Nneka...especially in 2012. She was good, but indistinguishable from the other "good" players out there.

Neither of them deserved to be on the 2012 Olympic team, and pretending that they weren't put on there because of Geno's influence is being oblivious to reality.

Ur rite. If Diamond was a Uconn she would be on the team easily.

Diamond would have been on the team if she played for UConn because she would have been playing for a coach who developed her as a player.

We all know that Holly can't coach for sh!t. Why are we surprised that no one who played under her was able to develop and become successful at the next level? The only reason Diamond is where she's at is because she was smart enough to get away from Holly for a year so that she could get some real coaching before entering the WNBA draft.

By the way im still holding out hope that Diamond makes the 3x3 Olympic Team so our streak of Lady Vols in every Olympic is not dead yet

Was it Diamond or Cierra? I don't remember Diamond leaving to partake in that tournament.

Cierra participated in a 3x3 Nationals with College Teams and won MVP and maybe they are looking at her for consideration as well but for 3x3 they are picking players from the US pool and there is rumblings that the players that helped them qualify for Tokyo this past May Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum,Stefanie Dolson, and Katie Lou might not even make the roster so there will be more controversy over USA basketball in the coming weeks

That's dumb not to pick the players that got them through qualifying. I would think that 3x3 is specialized enough that you would want to pick players that have experience in it.

Of course, if selecting Dolson and KLS means two more UConn players added to the Olympic team...

Serious question here:

Going back as far as 1996, can anyone think of a time when a former UConn player was legitimately snubbed from an Olympic roster spot?
None that I can think of. I don't know if Nykeesha Sales ever played in the Olympics, but there were probably better players that were picked ahead of her at her spot.

The obvious ones all have multiple selections, along with some questionable ones. Not just for the Olympics, but also the USWNT.
