ONE hurdle Heupel needs to clear to be an all time great Tennessee coach

For Heupel to take next step, he will need to improve coaching staff and discipline, the sloppiness at times is inexcusable.

Heupel has already got two 10 win seasons. Only Bill Battle had that many so early on in his tenure. He's already beaten Bama twice.H e's already beaten Florida twice, Fulmer only beat them 4 time his entire tenure. He hasnt beat Georgia but I suspect he will take care of that next season when they come to Knoxville. He's got a NY6 bowl victory and put UT in talks for national championship contender.

The one thing left that I see is to win a big road game against top competition. Tennessee hasn't beaten a top10 team on the road in 19 seasons. He's proven he can beat very good teams if he has the help of the home crowd but he has to prove he has the coaching chops to win the big games on the road. He has his chance right in front of him.

I never expected Tennessee to win a CFP game this year because I didn't think the offense was where it needs to be. I thought if we had a home game we could get it done but never a true road game. This would be Heupel's chance to put that question to bed in my mind and make him one of the top coaches UT has ever had.

His only hurdle IMO is he MUST beat a Kirby Smart coached UGA team soon. The clock is ticking. The UT program cannot have a team roll up on it's schedule it's coach cannot defeat if he plans on being there long term.

Beating Georgia is just a means to an end...it's simple, we need to play for and win SEC titles, 2 appearances every 5 yrs and 1 title should be the expectation

1. Being a bad AD doesn’t have any impact on Fulmer’s performance as a coach.

2. We were wandering the wilderness under multiple ADs before Fulmer ever got the job. When Fulmer left as AD, everything but football and women’s basketball were on a good track too.

You keep digging and keep looking more foolish.
I already said he ran with his chance and did well.

It's a scale situation for me. Fulmer at the end when he had already made a bunch of money from UT, still took more money even though he retired. He took every bit he could to ride on 1998 and it works for some.

That's fine for you. IMO, he took more from the university than he gave. He was a good ol boy who couldn't give up sticking his nose in the film room and probably everything else he could try to control....... and did it poorly.

But yes, he won a Natty and all is forgiven.

He gave you the only championship you’ll most likely ever see and made less money off of UT than Butch Jones. Somehow I find it hard to be mad at him for not forgoing his buyout or working as AD for free.

"sticking his nose in the film room"...it seems lost on you that the guy was a highly successful and highly regarded OC before he became a head coach.

Florida is on their way back as well
After 2025, Tennessee will not be playing Florida every year. Whether the SEC goes to a nine game schedule or an eight game schedule, they will have to rotate off. So Florida will not be as big a concern to us as they have been.

Its simple. He has to win a championship, either SEC or natty. Huepel might be fondly remembered if he manages neither but he certainly won't be considered one of the greats here.
