And the second, even better, evolution I undertook was: don't even look at VN.com except during halftime and after the game. And ignore pretty much all the threads created during the game, because they're usually just more of that raw emotion poison.

Instead of sharing my game thoughts with you all, I share them with the people around me in the real world. And because I'm (usually) not a petulant child, very little of it is angry or mean-spirited. We have a great time at the game together, laughing and joking or being concerned, whatever the mood fits. But we treat each other like we love each other because...well, we do.

That is an emotion that isn't going to temper us in this forum, because being honest we mostly don't love each other. Though I do think @Behr is kinda cute.

Americans call this free speech. When you create “rules” that is considered censorship.

Elon’s X is the model. Free and open speech with extreme exception. We (VN) hold each other accountable. Opinions will be diverse. It makes life fun.

Yah, sometimes "free speech" is a noble value misused by people who want to be petulant children. Or just jerks.

I had free speech as a kid. I'd still get a whuppin' or my mouth filled with soap if I took my free speech too far.

I had free speech in the Army. I'd still get an Art 15 or other punishment if I took that too far.

Same at work. Same at school. Same in the community center. There are acceptable standards of HOW you go about exercising free speech throughout our society, and penalties for taking it too far.

Problem on social media is, there usually are no real consequences. Sure, you can be ignored, or silenced, or even kicked off the site, but that usually doesn't stop the miscreant from creating another account and continuing on. There are no REAL consequences to being abhorrent.

VN.com kind of depends on us all being mature, thoughtful adults. Problem is, quite a few of us are not that.

So sure, free speech away. But be ready to pay the consequences if you go beyond the limits of acceptable social dialogue. To the extent there are any (consequences).

Would you be surprised if I said your whole application of your premise is WAY OFF?

I agree with your premise. Game thread can be for:
- running commentary on the moment.
- outlet for frustration.
- celebrating the good.
- keeping these outbursts away from family and pets.

I disagree you are providing commentary "only at that specific moment". Let me elaborate.
Comments about someone not being it, getting outcoached, and game is over are all based on your feelings in the moment PLUS an assessment on what's to come. You cannot possibly know who is getting outcoached because you don't know the game plan. You don't know what is to come...who is or isn't it. You're letting your inherent negativity run away with you.

"That play sucked. That was bad execution. We need to improve. That player can do better. Our QB is rattled."
...these are examples of comments that truly reflect what is happening in the moment.

I personally think what grates on others are the pronouncements of what's to come and (if you're paying attention) they are all negative. That is tiring.

We are expressing and sharing ideas. That's it. I provided feedback to your post.

VN is a big tent. Freak and the team have created a great place for all Vol fans.

I do like the idea of a game thread. I travel overseas on business a LOT and when the time is early AM or no WiFi for streaming, I like having a friendly site (VN) to get updates And not just rely on ESPN. But it’s impossible to actually follow a game with all the negativity. (I do like it when someone actually puts in the score and other relevant facts from time to time). I was at the Clint Stoerner ARK game in 98 - so I know if things don’t look good early, remember it’s a long game and anything can happen. I’ve noticed similar negative comments by some for basketball and baseball as well this past year. I understand “heat of the moment”, but not every play is a TD, and in baseball, 1 out of 3 average is great! I’m not sure I have the answer - maybe we also just need a place to vent. I’ll also note that we are not alone. I took an old friend (Huge Gump fan) to the game Saturday. This mild mannered man became un-recognizable a couple times, hurling streams of curse words - not at refs, etc, but at his own players because they weren’t perfect. Not a good look - no matter what color you wear.

During the Florida game i questioned coaching(4th and 2 and own 11) during the game I questioned play calling and our QB. During the bammer game I questioned qb, i admit i was one of many that was like maybe we should put back up in.. Nico looks like freshman and is in over his head.. Well we saw what our backup did on his one play and then in the second half it was like we came alive.. Nico had a beautiful pass and a nice run and its like the team I saw and had hoped for came alive. You all knew what you had all along and we are blessed to have you as players and coaches and have to always remember you are all giving your all for Tennessee and im an armchair monday morning qb that needs to shut up

1st rule of the nega club is never apologize for your negativity. You are posting in that moment. If it ticks off the self proclaimed better fan then so be it

You will be positive when positive things happen !

The only call I had much of an issue with is kicking a 53 yard fg on 4th and 3, either go for it, or punt them inside the 10. Both are statistically better plays than a 53-yarder from a kicker with known accuracy issues on long fgs.

No apology necessary, IMO. Everyone is different. I don't post much during the game, mostly because I'm busy watching the game. But I also realize that I'm apt to post some frustrated thought that will make me look silly to others (and probably later to myself).

I also think a lot of the replies in this thread are silly, but anyway who cares what I think?

I know there’s a line that can be crossed with certain comments personally attacking a player/coach but those seem rare and usually get called out quickly by others. A game thread is “enter at your own risk” and you kinda know what your going to see there based on how the game is going. Apologies for my frustration posts during stretches of poor play.

Never been in a game thread during a game because I watch games on delay to avoid commercials and halftime, but I'm still not sure if I could engage in a stream of consciousness online while watching with psychotic people expressing their every thought.

Seems like a lot of folks agree that if you read the comments of a game thread when the team is not playing well and get offended - that’s on you. If it makes you feel superior to dig up comments that are several hours old from a game thread to tell someone how less a fan they are then here’s a gold ⭐️.

I don't think you should make the statement "ALL the fans". I wasn't negative and in fact did some bashing against those who were incessantly so. There are several others that are probably upset about being put into that category.

We have a bye week this Saturday - so no you won’t.

Why would you apologize for being correct????

We’re all happy Nico got to sit down and then did some growing up in the 2nd half in HIS win against Alabama. We’re all hoping it’s a turning point.

But you won’t catch me apologizing for 3.5 games of crappy play calling and execution.
(Keep in mind, Bama isn’t good on defense. We’re not out of the woods yet 🙄)

I’ll complain and I’ll cheer FREELY! These “people “ don’t pay my bills or influence me in any kind of way.

There’s no reason to apologize when you were RIGHT…
