OPEN APOLOGY

To be honest, this is a weird season. We haven't played up to potentially all year except maybe the NC State game...

Yet we still continue to win. We have a great team and I still think that even Nico and the WRs can play at a high level if they can figure it out.

I think this is why TN still has doubters. Still a lot of games to play.

We have a bye week this Saturday - so no you won’t.

Why would you apologize for being correct????

We’re all happy Nico got to sit down and then did some growing up in the 2nd half in HIS win against Alabama. We’re all hoping it’s a turning point.

But you won’t catch me apologizing for 3.5 games of crappy play calling and execution.
(Keep in mind, Bama isn’t good on defense. We’re not out of the woods yet 🙄)

I’ll complain and I’ll cheer FREELY! These “people “ don’t pay my bills or influence me in any kind of way.

There’s no reason to apologize when you were RIGHT…

Lulz.

Yah, that wouldn't work, CBO. Because, among other reasons, the negas would go to the pumper thread to troll, while the pumpers would similarly go to the nega thread if things were going well.

My approach to VN.com during the games has evolved over the years. Used to be, if I was at home, I'd watch the game with computer in lap, ready to share my thoughts with the rest of you. Mind you, I didn't have time to read what YOU said, I just wanted to let you know what _I_ thought.

That is inherently unhealthy, to be on transmit rather than receive. You learn very little when transmitting.

On top of which, the game thread is cancer, because so many people use it as a raw outpouring of emotion. Unfiltered garbage straight from everyone's amygdala.

So the first evolution I went through was: stay out of the game thread.

And the second, even better, evolution I undertook was: don't even look at VN.com except during halftime and after the game. And ignore pretty much all the threads created during the game, because they're usually just more of that raw emotion poison.

Instead of sharing my game thoughts with you all, I share them with the people around me in the real world. And because I'm (usually) not a petulant child, very little of it is angry or mean-spirited. We have a great time at the game together, laughing and joking or being concerned, whatever the mood fits. But we treat each other like we love each other because...well, we do.

That is an emotion that isn't going to temper us in this forum, because being honest we mostly don't love each other. Though I do think @Behr is kinda cute.

Go Vols!

It gets more challenging now with phones. You can log in and post anywhere, even at sports bars.

Dear CJH and Nico and OL and everyone else on team and coaches,
I speak for all the fans when I say I am sorry for being negative during Florida and Alabama game on the board here. During the Florida game i questioned coaching(4th and 2 and own 11) during the game I questioned play calling and our QB. During the bammer game I questioned qb, i admit i was one of many that was like maybe we should put back up in.. Nico looks like freshman and is in over his head.. Well we saw what our backup did on his one play and then in the second half it was like we came alive.. Nico had a beautiful pass and a nice run and its like the team I saw and had hoped for came alive. You all knew what you had all along and we are blessed to have you as players and coaches and have to always remember you are all giving your all for Tennessee and im an armchair monday morning qb that needs to shut up
I apologize.
I am sure I will be back at it Saturday but it will be while pulling as hard as i can for you from the stands or my couch.. dont know which one yet

Confession is good for the soul. You will be a better person. This is why coaches coach and players play and we are spectators!

Robert E. Lee once lamented that all the best generals were working as newspapermen rather than serving in the Army. It’s true of sports too. All the best coaches are in the stands and writing sports columns rather than on the sidelines. 😉

Speak for yourself, please.

Some of us understand that there are ups and downs for every team, especially in CFB these days.

And we get that Nico (despite the "8 mil" people keep harping on) is still a kid playing his first 6,7,8 games in a pressure cooker league.

And that Josh has lifted this program from the ash heap to respectability and now to elite level in a ridiculously short period of time.

It helps to put it in perspective and not take a game played by 19-21 year olds personally.
Let’s not forget when we play Alabama it’s 17-21 year olds.

In this offense you have to keep running to keep things honest. In the last 2 games the running game has come alive in the second half. Sampson has to eat, we ran great against Bama in the redzone in the second half. I think Heard is starting to get his legs under him. Fans have a tendency to get impatient and panic sometimes. We had fans booing we didn’t go for it on 4th and 6 from our own 40 in the 3rd quarter. Thank goodness Heupel didn’t let grumbling change his thinking. What happened we punted and downed the ball at the 3. Got it back in great position and scored. Heupel kept taking shots with Nico downfield even after the first half misses and a few drops. And then bang we hit a long one and we score and then Nico delivers a pretty ball for a good score to Brazzell. We are coming around on offense, we weren’t far off and we’re not far off like some were portraying. If we can stay relatively healthy I like where this team is going as we head to the backstretch run! GBO!!!!!

I stopped looking at game threads long ago because of the small percentage of fans/posters who feel they have to disparage players and coaches. They simply ruin that piece of game day activity.

I don’t post often in game threads since I attend home games and a couple away, too.

Every team’s message board has negative comments. Visit Steelers Talk and you will read similar comments. He$$, go attend a 9 yr game. Parents are often complaining about other players. The parents go insane over a 6 yr old football game.

I try to keep an even keel but won’t deny that I’ve never mentioned a player or posted a negative comment. It’s called venting as I love TN sports, though the don’t let it control my life.

I will tell y’all that players read message boards and expect negative comments. Coaches tell them to avoid social media but it’s almost impossible for a 17-22 yr old.

My son is senior @ Rocky Top so he speaks to some of the players, esp walk-ons, as a few visit his fraternity. In a nut shell, the players know negative commentary is part of it playing @ an elite school. But my ask is to post positive comments, too.

Just my $.02 from a father of two kiddos in college- one @ MS. State and the other @ UT.

Go Vols!

LOL, that's well and true, I know very little about football - but I knew enough to know Tebow was going to run left.
And that he was going to get the first down when playing TN regardless of the fact that every UT player knew exactly what was about to happen.

Do yall think UT players and coaches read this board? I think I would try to stay away from these boards if I was a player or coach.
I think perhaps Josh reads it to them at halftime, what else would get them mad and motivated to come out and play better?

No need to apologize for being a fan.

Also, I don't think those guys are on here.

I think we need a family meeting over what a game thread is/isn’t and maybe take a vote on what rules if any we should agree on. IMO, a game thread is a running commentary relevant only at that specific moment. “We suck”, “{player name} ain’t it”, “Heupel’s getting outcoached”, “this game is over” -
All these types of comments reflect what has happened to that particular time of the game. It’s an outlet of frustration for people like me that keeps me from scaring my dog and making my wife mad. I come to game threads to commiserate with fellow Vol fans when things are looking bad and celebrate when it’s going great. The only solution I can think of is to have a separate game thread for the negas and one for the sunshine pumpers. But I really don’t think that works. I know there’s a line that can be crossed with certain comments personally attacking a player/coach but those seem rare and usually get called out quickly by others. A game thread is “enter at your own risk” and you kinda know what your going to see there based on how the game is going. Apologies for my frustration posts during stretches of poor play.

After 70 years of watching bad play I just get a bowl of ice cream.

It takes a man to apologize, so job well done.
However speaking for a crowd in an apology does not cut it.
IOWs, speak for yourself.
I gave you a like for the man part, so don't ruin it by being a kid.

Quote from a famous football coach but can't remember who, maybe Earl "Red" Blaik

Every man thinks he do three things better than anybody else:
build a fire, run a hotel and coach a football team.
No real man stops at 3. You forgot providing directions.

“But I watch you and I think you do what it is you do as good as it's ever been done“

Anyone else been around long enough to get that?

I’m always reminded of Sab’s love letter to Scroggins anytime anyone drops a Dear so-and-so post.

I get that.. i still say my bad. I will always root for the Vols and I am optimistic but during the game with a beverage or 9 in i get less optimistic

I appreciate the sentiment.
That being said, I will overreact. I will scream at Heupel. I will make outlandish statements about the play calling and execution.....because I am a fan at that's what we do. None of it is personal. It doesn't mean I have any hatred for Heupel, the job he's done, or any player. Those were the Bitch Jones days :) and they are gone.
