Oregon fires coach Mark Helfrich

Lane Kiffin as a head coach scares me exactly zero.

With Monte as the DC, not so much.

With a competent DC from this century and that talent pool, he could do some damage short term IMO.

Long term he wears out the welcome and gets them in trouble as others have alluded.

Nothing shocks me any more but I would be mildly surprised if McElwain flew west.

I think the McElwain to Oregon rumor is simply angling for a raise. Can't see him leaving UF for Oregon.

If I was McElwain, I would jump on that in a heartbeat. Get's him away from Saban. I think it's easier to win out west than here. Plus he has recruiting ties to the Midwest.

Really? Eugene > Gainesville and PAC 12 is less competitive

Overall PAC 12 is less competitive than the SEC, but PAC north is tougher than SEC east.

Gainesville sucks. I've never been to Eugene, but I can absolutely believe it's better than Gainesville. So that may play a role. We'll see. I'm all for him leaving.

Saban is running all the good coaches off. Lets face it. Why is the Big 10 better now? Why do we have a bunch of 8-4 teams...because all the other programs in the SEC are mired in mediocrity, while Saban is King.

no the schools run off coaches because they aren't meeting unrealistic expectations.

here at UT we are historically winning the east every 4 years and winning the SEC every other time we win the east. Butch is a year behind that averaged rate because he had a much worse starting position than Fulmer did.

every fan base acts like its reasonable to win their division and conference every year when historically its never been done.

I would bet you $20,000 that Butch will win the SEC before he will.

It's hard to win it when you're not getting there. If Florida keeps going, they'll have a punchers chance at an upset at some point.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you so sure McElwain is worse than Butch? Not being argumentative, just asking.

IMO Butch has had a better team 2 years in a row. We split the games. But Florida found a way to go to Atlanta. Plus McElwain is an offensive guy who is bringing in players. Another year or 2 and that offense should be rolling (time will tell).

Unless you're Saban at Bama

True. Fleck makes sense there and he would jump start their recruiting. But they haven't hired someone that didn't have ties to the school/area since like the 60's.

Well it's since the 70s, but this is different. Time for new blood and now the funds and program are at a level to attract a great coach from outside the existing staff.

The Eugene area has some things in common with Knoxville. Probably similar in size, beautiful area, wild life, fishing, mountains, rivers and a state with a smaller population requiring recruiting outside the area. I live in Eugene and the weather is pretty mild compared to the midwest and northeast. It's December and I have a tee time for 11 am Saturday at a local country club. It's a little wet here in the winter but it's just a hour drive up the mountains to the ski resorts. The Pacific coast is just an hour away as well.

Of course when it comes to athletic facilities Oregon is certainly one of the very top facilities in the country. Then toss in the Nike connection and life is good.

A beautiful area from Eugene to the coast. With the Nike backing and facilities, it's sad to see y'all at 4-8 this year. I believe our programs face similar challenges. Both forced to do a majority of recruiting out of state yet have good facilities and money.

If I couldn't stomach Briles, then I would go after Phil Montgomery. Briles' disciple, great success in Tulsa. Seems to fit the Oregon brand.

That's not the Briles I think of.... Seastrunk was bought in my opinion. Plus you look at how they seemed to look the other way at Baylor with the sexual assaults and this doesn't sound like a guy who runs a clean disciplined program.

Note: I'm not saying Oregon was pure and clean with Seastrunk either and I'm very disappointed about that. Along that same note, it's probably why we won't see Chip Kelly back in Eugene again.
