Blue-chip Ohio State quarterback recruit Quinn Ewers has struck an autograph deal with GT Sports Marketing to a name, image and likeness rights deal, which ESPN reports will pay Ewers $1.4 million over three years, the potential length of Ewers' collegiate career. The agreement is believed to be the biggest single NIL deal since those rights were allowed to college athletes on July 1.

What's particularly notable about this NIL deal is that it features a player who has yet to take a single snap in college. However, Ewers' unique profile makes him an intriguing target for agencies looking to buy low.

That will be an interesting deal if CJ Stroud is as good as Ohio State thinks he is. Might be a good while before Ewers starts and I doubt that marketing firm will enjoy paying over $1M for a backup.

They are probably looking at it from a risk profile and is banking on him being a superstar…decided that paying him $1M now is a deal compared to his potential market value in a few years.

They have another young guy, McCord, who is a good QB also. Ewers is sitting at QB3 now, probably, because he's so green.

Ewers will stay at Ohio State but it's a matter of time before the portal potential and NIL potential collide for coaches and players. "My NIL chances are better if I'm starting, coach, so the ball is in your court....."

They’re paying him $1.4M for what exactly? All his autographs belong to them?

Yeah basically. Here's 1.4 Million, now sign anything we tell you to.
I hope this isn't an exclusive deal that "EVERY autograph you sign for the next 3 years goes through us then to the fan...... for a fee."

That could get ugly. I know old coots like Pete Rose show up and sign at odd places but I've no idea if it's flat fee or per sig or what. I'd hate to think Pete can't walk down the street, get recognized, and sign something without breaking a contract with someone.

I believe those Pete Rose type of signings are a flat fee paid to him by the stores. The stores then try to make their money back by the sales they make.

Interesting thought. What happens to the kid that dad took to the football game and now can't get an autograph cause he's prohibited by his agent now. This seriously affects those genuine players, like Dobbs, who will no longer, under NIL contract, be allowed to sign a hat, take a selfie with someone, or anything of the like without violating their contract. They all just became jerks. I have no inkling what's in these contracts.

Sadly, from what I understand, this autograph contract means the company he signed with gets exclusive autograph rights. On top of his 1.4 million autograph deal, he also signed a deal with a beverage company from Texas and a deal with an Ohio Car dealership. Dude isn't even on campus at Ohio State yet and is rolling in the cash.

It'll ruin a lot of them, just like many pro athletes get ruined when they get a payday.

This Quinn Ewers situation is an interesting trial balloon from the marketer's perspective. $1.4m to a kid who is currently a 3rd string QB and hasn't played a down in college is bold. If Ewers ends up starting and panning out (either at Ohio St or another big school), it could open the door for even more lucrative deals for high school players that follow him. If Ewers is the next Tate Martell, it could have a chilling effect.

If you are a high school player with college aspirations, you definitely want to see Ewers pan out because it could mean more money for you.

And I'm sure there are structured fines in the contract that penalizes the player for giving unauthorized signatures. These kids lack much discipline at all already at their age. The agent has them over a barrel. The player won't receive a whole lot. It's no different than a pro player contract. Multi-state earnings and taxes. Agent fees. Fines. Greedy Accountant. The player will see very little. Their 4 year scholly will still have more net worth.

It's gonna ruing the locker room and coach/player relationships. The agents are banking on numbers and percentages. They know not all of these contracts will pan out. But, the kids will feel more pressure to start because they have a deal and the portal will totally blow wide open.

Fed, state, FICA (both ee & er portion) taxes, agent fees, etc will eat away at alot of that $466,666 per year

And this kid was supposed to still be a HS Senior. This is gonna trickle down and ruin HS sports soon.
There are only 3 states currently that do not allow NIL deals to existing high school athletes. This is why Quinn Ewers opted out and enrolled early. The state of Texas does not allow NIL deals.

I don't begrudge Ewers but if this prohibits him from signing anything on his on...... he needs a better attorney/NIL agent.

Hopefully it just keeps him from SELLING his signature. As mentioned above, I'd hate for any athlete to be turned into "fan hater" because of a contract.

Thing is, most of these contracts are long shots. Very few of these kids are a lock to give ROI's. This kid may well be a great HS QB. But, he's a 17 year old Frosh that skipped a full season of play and development this year to sit on the bench and be #3. I'm not paying to get his, or any of the others autograph. I bet the Stockton kid up at Rabun Gap, GA will get a nice offer. He's headed to UGA. He's a player for sure, now. He'll be going from a 2a school to the SEC. Then again, he has a good head on his shoulders. He turned down an invite (against his coaches advice) to the Elite 11 because he's never missed a Rabun workout or practice and he wasn't about to start now.

Well, that explains that.
