The market is going to correct itself either way. It'll ruin a lot of them, just like many pro athletes get ruined when they get a payday.
This Quinn Ewers situation is an interesting trial balloon from the marketer's perspective. $1.4m to a kid who is currently a 3rd string QB and hasn't played a down in college is bold. If Ewers ends up starting and panning out (either at Ohio St or another big school), it could open the door for even more lucrative deals for high school players that follow him. If Ewers is the next Tate Martell, it could have a chilling effect.
If you are a high school player with college aspirations, you definitely want to see Ewers pan out because it could mean more money for you.
Only if they sign an exclusive contract that specifies freebies as well as paid. I would imagine the contract only covers coordinated events run by third parties.Interesting thought. What happens to the kid that dad took to the football game and now can't get an autograph cause he's prohibited by his agent now. This seriously affects those genuine players, like Dobbs, who will no longer, under NIL contract, be allowed to sign a hat, take a selfie with someone, or anything of the like without violating their contract. They all just became jerks. I have no inkling what's in these contracts.
I have to say, I'm not surprised. Backstory. This kid was supposed to be the starting QB at Southlake. I don't think many of you realize the type of players Southlake produces. These guys are studs, and many of them get D1 offers. Think of Maryville, CAK, Alcoa, or any elite HS program in Tennessee, then multiply that by 20. Southlake is that good. Remember Greg McElroy, who led Alabama to the National Championship his Junior Year? Starting QB at Southlake. The high school my daughters attended played Southlake...and while we held on, Southlake always seemed to pull out the win. They are that good, and that well coached. I haven't seen Southlake play in years, but this kid must be a stud, so I'm not at all surprised.
And ironically, his parents are most likely multimillionaires. Southlake is like Sequoia Hills on steroids.
Excuse my ignorance, but wasn't Stroud on our radar for a while, or am I total wrong?CJ Stroud is a RS freshman. If he starts for two years and assuming he’s like the last two OSU QB’s and balls out he will be gone after 2022. Ewers (who let’s not forget was scheduled to be on campus starting in 2022 anyways) was probably expecting this since he didn’t get in campus till a month ago. I’m sure has had conversations with Ryan Day about playing time. Ewers can easily be starting at Ohio State by 2023 as a RS Sophomore and will easily have six figures+ in his bank account.
I’m sure he’s fine with the decision he made.
In my experience, I have found a lot of Texans (and especially people who live in Texas but aren't originally from there) to be nice but arrogant and pretentious people. They think the way they do things in their state is a little more special or unique than it actually is.Chase Daniel and Kenny Hill also came out of Southlake Carroll.
I also think you are underestimating with your multiplier of 20. I would have gone more with 50. People in those communities think of their high school programs.like we do the Vols. A loss on Friday and the whole next week is shot.
Actually, it's not just Southlake that is like that. Half of those suburban Dallas high schools are football factories. Highland Park (M Stafford), Allen(Kyler Murray), the Plano schools are littered with D1 signees, etc etc.
