Our coaches hit the road today evaluating prospects....

Except when you take into account Brown had just finished a ten win season at UNC when he moved on to Texas. How many of those did Dooley run up at La. Tech?

That's great. Maybe we got him earlier than Texas did Mack and got a bargain. He's probably saving his 10 win seasons for here.

Maybe not. Who knows?

BPV are you going to go to the Army-Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium this year? I was trying to purchase tickets but I have to donate to the A Club first I think.

But hiring the possible exception to the rule is crazy.

Unless you have a really, really good reason for thinking he's the exception. Statistically, it's a loser, but every once in a while, there's a gem. We're in the position of hoping MH found it. Well. . . that's a little disconcerting. But, as has been said, he's really respected by other coaches, so there's at least some hope.

How long did it take him to reach that point? His first few years weren't very successful.

A while, but no major program was going to give him a job before he proved that he could be successful in a conference that was terrible. People would feel better about Dooley if he had actually gotten to the successful part.

Yeah, USC is still in the depths of irrelevancy for that probation O brought upon them. So much so, they hired him this past winter.

So you really don't think the potential for probation isn't great with him, whether it happens or not.

No. You get probation if you get careless and stupid about what you do. That staff seems quite capable of covering up whatever tracks they may leave.

While UNC was no big time job, his record at Tulane was piss poor as well.

Gary Crowton went 21-13 at La. Tech. I'd take my chances that Lane Kiffin could at least match that.

And what was the difference between Crowton's La Tech regime and Dooley's? They were independent and could schedule whoever they wanted. He did have one impressive win over Alabama. Other than that....color me unimpressed.

Dooley had an 8 and 5 season his first year there and then had all kinds of problems his second year. He was at least trending in the right direction. Crowton went 6-5 and 6-6 two out of his first 3 years -- omitting a 9-2 season in his second year.

Looking up Mack Browns record at Tulane, he was 14-31.

He started out 1-10 for two years at UNC while Dick Crum was 5-6 the year before.

You are correct, he did turn UNC around, but by your logic, he should have never even been hired at UNC by his record at Tulane.

What exactly does all this diatribe have to do with our coaches out on the recruiting trail?

Yeah, because being forced to play the Idahos, New Mexico States, Utah States, and San Jose States is a real death march.

Completely different. UNC is an awful football program that considers Duke their big rival. Big difference between UT and UNC making the hire.

I guess I was having hallucinations when Aqib Talib, Todd Reesing, and Dezmon Briscoe were celebrating with their teammates in Miami after beating Virginia Tech in the FedEx OB.
Kansas has a more recent BCS win than UT. That's flat sad.

They also played Fresno State, Boise State, LSU, and Auburn. Those are pretty much 4 guaranteed losses anyway you dice it. Fresno and Boise are recruiting and competing at a different level than LA Tech. Who knows if Dooley would have taken them to that level?
