Our Recruiting Surge

USC fans are spoiled and you are ignorant.

We still have very high expectations for our team just like ya'll do every year because we are still a powerhouse. We have had a couple coaching issues but we are getting it together.

USCs slump had already started with a Loss to UCLA and Oregan state in '06 and a loss to Stanford in '07.

Volman, yeh the truth hurts, we don't seem to be getting the big names like we used to, but one team comes to mind and makes that article look silly.

I noticed that no one commented on this article. Im assuming it's because the truth hurts.

Have you applied that specifically to OL's?

UT has two guys who possibly could have come out as Jr's. Both were 3*.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter. It would be nice to have the assurance that someone had looked at these guys and been as impressed as UT's staff seems to have been. But lack of notice by Rivals or Scout doesn't mean they aren't any good.

Revis had been getting notice and especially from ESPN. Schofield and Phillips are both very large. The common things said about all of them are that they have good feet, good speed, are hard workers, and smart... They also aren't fat. UT has had a hard time with guys no matter how they were rated who came in fat.

I don't know how it will relate to recruit rankings but UT seems to be looking for OL's they can build up rather than trim down and are taking good feet over great strength. They seem to be recruiting for the Broncos style of OL that features zone blocking.

Tennessee just isn't a 5* caliber program. You guys need to go pull for USC. This is why you don't have a job in football. Because you are so nieve to the whole process and what it takes to win.

I may be naive, but Im going to have to draw the line at being called nieve.

Last year's SEC All Conference 1st team OL consisted of:

1 former 5*
2 former 4*
2 former 3*
and 2 former 2*

OL and DT are the most difficult positions for the recruiting svcs to evaluate.

Good illustrative point... and you'd have to think Fulmer can evaluate O linemen, like him or not. I definitely trust his judgment in that regard.

its great that we are getting believed to be o linemen
but while we are holding this camp for recruits couldn't we use that opportunity to grab replacements for LB and DL and positions like that

You do realize that Anthony Parker and Ramon Foster will graduate after this season. Josh McNeil will be a SR next season, Chris Scott will be a SR next year, Jacques McClendon will be a SR next year, and finally Vlad Richards will be a SR next year. I think getting 3 OL prospects is just what we need.

After the 09 season we will have Ramone Johnson, William Brimfield, the 3 OL we signed last year, and whoever we sign this year including these 3. OL is a need for this class.

DL are the next big need for this class. Especially DT.

I'm just going to assume that our coaches are pretty good at assessing talent. I don't see Chris Donald or Ben Martin making huge strides and they were 5 star recruits. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. I'm just going to go on the assumption that if our coaches see a kid play and offer him -- he must have some talent. I don't see us wasting scholarships.

As for the article about higher rated players going higher in the draft -- that makes sense. Higher rated players go to better schools, with better coaches, with better facilities, and with more stiff competition. They are much more prepared for the NFL. There are exceptions to every rule (Flacco) but also, let's not forget how many busts there are at the 5 and 4 star level. We have plenty under our belt for the Vols.

I somehow skipped over Darius Myers and Jarrod Shaw. They haven't lettered yet. Myers was a 4 star and Shaw was a 3 star. We also will have Cody Sullins although I don't know if he's on scholly yet or not, but as of right now he's 2nd string center.

Ben Martin is 2nd string DE. Chris Donals OTOH will be mop up and ST's.

Thanks -- reiterates that a 5 star rating is still hit or miss. In the end, Berry will always prove that some 5 stars are easily worth their ranking.

Chris Donald played in a weak HS class. Lesser competition made him look like a great player. He will catch up and by the end of his sophomore year he will be a major contributor.

I've heard his issues are not physical but mental -- he's struggling with the playbook and the complexity of the college game. Any idea if that is true?

I had extremely high hopes for he and Martin.

speaking of 5 stars, Jimmy Clausen was highly rated... too bad we didn't pull him in.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these commitments gain stars in their ranking after their SR year. As for your case of 3* players, wasn't Mayo 3* and all he did was go in the top 10 of the draft.

Matt Ryan was a 3* and wasn't really recruited that heavily by big name schools.
