I don't know what to think of the hire yet. I don't know much about him in detail. I also didn't expect a big hire because I was fully aware of the hiring process and what was keeping coaches away. I am happy we have someone that wants to be here, and that's not phony.

Phony is pretending to know what the future holds. Phony is acting like you know more about football than Peyton, ESPN writers and Mort. Phony is criticizing a coaches future here that signed a contract this morning. Anybody can say he isn't going to make it. That's gutless. Not many coaches could come into UT with recruiting disadvantages and win a title playing the best of the best that are coached by the best.
If being a "good little soldier" means rolling with the punches and seeing what happens vs whining for another year like you and your ilk have done the last year, then call me a damn good little soldier all day.

I was really unhappy with the hire this morning and honestly, I'm not entirely sure Jones is ready for the challenges ahead of him here but after taking some time to read up on him and his philosophy I think he'll do well enough here to call him a vast upgrade over Dooley. My next door neighbor is a UC grad and is PISSED we took him away... That is kind of telling to me... As I said in another thread, i'll withhold final judgement until this time next year but the bottom line is this.... Tennessee needs Butch Jones to succeed and Tennessee fans need to do everything they can to facilitate that. If Butch does his part i feel sure we fans will do our part. By the end of October we'll have a much clearer picture of what the future holds....

yup - pretty much all the major sports writers that cover ncaa fbs are throwing nothing but praise and roses at this hire. hell - what you're not hearing is that jones garners a lot of respect from the fbs coaching community and to a person say tennessee made the better hire than kentucky, arky and auburn.

You don't know if the "FBS coaching community" respects him or not. He's gotten promoted consistently so somebody in the profession respects him. Please enlighten us on who said he isn't respected by his peers?

Well, Hart said he contacted a lot of well respected coaches of high caliber and they all had nothing but high praise for Coach Jones. Said he is a great coach and a tireless recruiter. You hardly ever get public praise from coaches, so this is the best we got.

since I've already seen it in many forms today, are people going to start using the following phrases again?

"He's our coach. Support him or GTFO."

"You're not VFL if you don't support the coach."

"Negavol"

There are many various, but I think you get the point. These phrases all served the blind lemmings so well with Dooley, so I'm glad they pulled them out again for the marginal hire we just made. I swear, if we put an orange tie on a trained monkey, some of you would think all "real fans" should support him, no questions asked. I could see the collective amnesia once people started swooning over a bunch of cliches at the opening press conference.

At some point, you have to start holding this administration accountable on the front end and not when they've blown everything up. Hiring a guy who's 14 and 9 in his crap conference and never won anything important to go head to head with Alabama and Florida is asinine.

Anyway, I just want you all to remember, when it goes bad for Jones (and it will), to go back to what was being said when Dooley was crashing the program and think twice about chastising people for not staying on the sinking ship.

ok big man lets do a little history. UT hires young coaches. If there is one thing that is consistant that is true. Majors, Fulmer, K-f-him, Dooley and Jones. It is a pattern that goes back to the General. We have taken a chance on all of these guys. Some of them worked and some didn't, but each was a young hire. Once they were winners we stuck with them and ended up with a winning program over time. UT will continue with this pattern and will find a young winner coach. Support the coach and don't lose your head. Evaluate him on his results as we did Dooley and if he doesn't work out fire his a@@.

So what do you propose we do now to make things better?

And what, oh wise man, do you propose I do to hold this administration accountable on the front end? Post anonymously on VN? Complaining on the back end isn't going to change it, you jackwagon.

Day 1 of the CBJ era, and I've seen more negativity here than ever. I, like many VFLs, will support our current coach. Will I agree with every play called? No. Will I agree with every decision "this administration" makes? Most likely not.

But he's the coach of the football team I love, and nothing will change that. Put on your rally cap, and let's hope he restores life to the way it needs to be on Rocky Top.

well said. he said all the right things in his presser today... imo if he doesn’t start winning by end of year two... GTFO.

i wonder if the doolaiders will be saying he needs more time because of the mess he "inherited"... it'll be the same ones that said the same thing about Dooley but then said he turned it around... oh the contradictions that are to ensue....

Our "ilk" were correct about everything the last year. Every damn thing. That's not called whining, that's called opening your eyes to the beast right in front of you. You pulled your Emily Post, good manners, sanctimonious card all the time to avoid the reality we were saying and hid behind this same tripe of "wait and see". It was absurd then and it's absurd now.

man, you are a loser.
Fine with me. You can whine for the next 3 years about CBJ sucking and do more I told you so threads then. That you get off on that junk is all I need to know.

Oh, and congrats on saying Dooley wouldn't make it, nostradumbass. You really went out there with that one. Here's the difference. I rolled with it, and you whined like a girl for the entire ride. I never said Dooley was the guy that would get us back. Go find where I said that, and I'll leave the forum for good. If you don't have hope, that's your own damn personal problem

And while we're at it, lets remember some more; blind lemmings, take off the orange sunglasses, quit drinking the orange koolade. So think twice before chastising people who want to give Coach Butch Jones a chance.

I would like to add that I am so tired of hearing from fans that I am not a fan if I do not support the new coach! I have every right to oppose this hire and to oppose the AD and the Administration and Boosters who facilitated this hire. I am fanatic about the Vols but I am not fanatic about a subversive coaching search nor am I fanatic about being less than mediocre in football for the past 5 years.

I do not blindly support anything nor will I blindly support the Athletic Department at Tennessee. We have been told today on this message board and in the media that we should get behind this coach and support him and the team: ra, ra, ra. If we don't, we get blasted by other so-called fans.

Well when is the last time the media types actually purchased a ticket for a football game and when is the last time those individuals ponied up the mandatory donation in order to secure season tickets??? That's a novel phrase - "mandatory donation" - a "donation" can be defined as a "free gift" however "mandatory" denotes a requirement - so we have a "free gift" that is "required" to secure tickets! Interesting concept to say the least but I digress.

I would venture to say that many on this board do not purchase season tickets and do not open their wallets to comply with UT's required "free gift" to secure those season tickets (this is true with many callers to sport's radio). Now are these fans not true fans since they do not purchase season tickets or comply with gifting requirements??? I would say that these fans are fans nonetheless just like the individual who gives big money to the Athletic Department. I do not call you out for not supporting the Vols enough however these same people attack me if I say that I will not renew my season tickets.

I am no less a fan because I withdraw my support of what is going on in the Athletic Dept and UT Administration as a whole! The only way to protest what has been occurring within the AD is to withdraw financial support and physical support, ie not going to games. Let me tell you when the fans did not show up at Neyland this year, it sent a message - are those fans that did not attend those games not fans because they chose to stay home???

So get over yourselves.

or remarkably stupid. I'll roll with sparty on this one. I understand that some fans are not happy because we didn't hire the "golden" child. And basically those same fans *****ed about Dooley, *****ed about Fulmer, etc. They just love to *****. On the other hand, a majority of fans are going to roll with CBJ but more importantly - roll with our Vols. People can dissect this hire however they want but it is what it is. I will stand behind CBJ because this is his dream job and he wanted it. The others didn't want it. He could have stayed at Cincy, continued to win, continued to get COTY awards, but he opted to better himself, he opted to become a VOL because he WANTED it. I believe his desire to better himself will reflect in our team to better themselves to be champions. He's not bringing bamboo or different colored dogs. He's bringing a new day to UT football. I for one will be in the stands. I think we'll have another 100,000 follow suit.

I get that everyone has an opinion and I had some coaches in mind that I had hoped we'd get, but since this hire was announced I've been disappointed in the reaction by many Vols fans. I say many because this doesn't apply to all, but it does apply to quite a few(such as the OP).

First, why get upset with Jones for taking the job and planning to do all he can to make the Vols better? Sure, you may not have wanted him or felt there were better candidates, but Jones didn't make the choice on who came he only made the choice that he and his family come and make TN their home when he clearly had other options.

With this logic I would expect Alum and fans to be angry with Strong and Gruden for choosing not to come. They obviously had the same choice Jones did and didn't make the same decision. Or better yet lets be angry with Gundy who clearly had no intentions on coming to UT, but did make a fool out of us by bringing UT to town and later rejecting the offer to get a pay raise with OK state.

Finally, if you're truly angry and upset about the hire your ire should be directed at Hart and Cheeks. They made the final decision on who was hired and should be the ones who take the heat should it not pan out.

Butch Jones simply made the choice to be a Vol and sounds like he'll give it all he has to make us relevant again. I will back him for now if for no other reason than that. I hope he succeeds and will be in Knoxville each fall to witness it until he gives me a reason not to.

Welcome to Tennessee Butch

Define realistic. We both know who you're talking about. Neither one of us knows what went on with Gruden. I simply feel Hart screwed it up. I felt we had a realistic chance to get him if everyone was on board. The only ones who knows if it was realistic or not was Cheek, Hart, the boosters, and Gruden. You can't bash me\us for wanting him. He gave us our perceived only hope to right this ship now as opposed to 3-4 years. I feel Tenn is worthy of the best and not someone who happened to be there available.

I wasn't specifically referring to anyone. I wanted Gruden badly as well, but it didn't happen. Gruden isn't talking about his side of the story, but even if he does some folks will think he's covering up for someone. I don't know and I don't care. Once that didn't happen, then what? Then who? Fisher and Gundy were pipe dreams. Bielema (sp?) had his eye on Arkansas for a while, so he wasn't coming here. Butch Davis, Petrino, and Tressel -- all dang good coaches -- are non-starters given our existing NCAA issues. Then what? Unfortunately the coaching pool is pretty dang shallow. No matter who we had picked, there would have been a bunch of people discontented.

I don't mind you or anyone for not renewing your tickets or not spending any additional money. I don't even mind when you continue to believe that a better coach was out there. I just don't see there being a significantly better option out there, all things considered. And this dude is a multiple time conference champion that players seem to like and want to play for. That indicates coaching ability on the field, recruiting ability, and motivational capacity -- three things that define an effective coach.

I also don't think any new coach would necessarily do well this year -- schedule is too tough especially with a new system. So one year is just too much to ask for anyone, including Coach Gruden. But in a few years, we'll see. Maybe he'll flame out and you can say I told you so. But I'll be very surprised if we have the boneheaded moves we've seen out of Dooley. Let's just see what happens. Go Big Orange!
